Wristen moves on
UCLA tight ends/special teams coach John Wristen has resigned to pursue an opportunity to become a collegiate head coach, Bruin head coach Karl Dorrell announced today.
"It looks like John has the chance to be in the mix for the head coaching position at Colorado State University/Pueblo, which is his alma mater,'' said Dorrell. "John wants to put all of his efforts into trying to land that job. We agreed that in order for him to focus all of his energies in that direction, it would be best for him to resign so he can be in Colorado to pursue that position.''
Dorrell indicated that he will move quickly to have a tight ends coach in place as quickly as possible. Safeties coach Gary DeLoach had been sharing the special teams duties with Wristen since before Spring Practice.
Wristen joined the Bruin staff in February of 2006 after seven years at Colorado. His family is still located in Lafayette, a Boulder suburb.

Probably wasn't making enough to move his family out to Los Angeles. Brian Schneider, now with the Raiders, left for that reason. Hope Coach Dorrell can find another gem like Eric Scott.

Brian ... cmon. This doesn't pass the smell test. Something is not right here. I know you need access but when is the truth going to come out?? Hopefully not after Dorrell goes 9-4 and gets another pass and another sub .500 season in '08!

DumpDorrell,
Wristen has been trying to leave since the end of the season, but couldn't find a job. He didn't like it here in L.A., which is why he never moved his family out here. I always thought it was peculiar his family remained in Colorado, but I will not say finances were the reason. After all, he still had to afford a place here, and keep his family at a place in Colorado.

Brian
Thanks for the background info. It makes more sense then the press release, which no one believes. Even if Wristen liked it here in LA, dont you think he would have (or should have) been shown the door anyway, with the weak performance of the teams under his charge??
Posted by: DumpDorrell at June 6, 2007 09:06 AM
Weak performance? Justin Medlock was an All American kicker and he was one of the only reasons UCLA was able to win any games last season. The tight ends weren't that great, but they lost Ryan Moya to an injury in the Oregon game.

Sure Medlock was great, no question the best in the nation. But you are not remembering the fact that special teams NEVER practiced live game situations until AFTER the 2nd game last year against Rice, which we almost lost due to, among other things, very poor special teams play (fumbles and blown coverages). How many punt returners did we go through?! You might also remember the many bad special teams plays (blocked field goals, fumbles, piss poor punt plays and coverage) during the season and including the FSU game. And as you already point out the TEs were poorly used and played poorly as well. Wristen should have been one of the first fired.

Dumpdorrell please do us all a favor and GO AWAY!!!!!!! The only thing that doesn't pass the smell test is you! You have a negative slant on EVEYTHING. You better be the Greatest college football EXPERT EVER!! You apparently know more than Brain. " I know you need access but when is the truth going to come out". Dumpdorrell so what is the truth?? Maybe we can make you head football coach and you can show everyone what YOU KNOW. Apparently your an expert on Special teams and Tightends too. If Wristen was so Bad! Why would he be considered for the HEAD COACHING POSITION AT COLORADO STATE/pueblo?? I KNOW DUMPDORRELL BECAUSE COLORADO STATE DOESN'T KNOW A THING ABOUT FOOTBALL COMPARED TO YOU!!

A+ you're too funny. Love the emotional response. Its typical of blind Lavin and Dorrell supporters. When you say "all" you should know that you do not represent all Bruin fans, not even close. I am one of a large group of fans that are tired of the mediocrity Dorrell gives us for $1 million a year. I suppose that you if accuse us of saying Dorrell's 7-6 4th season and 29-21 record is bad then we are guilty of having a negative slant as charged.
You sound like all those Lavin supporters who would get emotional defending his mediocrity calling all those who wanted him gone haters. Judging your response, you are the hater. I wouldnt be surprised if you supported Lavin and now, like all those rabid Lavinistas, have disappeared.
I am part of the UCLA faithful that likes to look at facts and make informed judgments. Take for example your emotional jab regarding my football knowledge. Let me spread some for you and clear up the Wristen situation as well. You probably know more about football than everyone at Colorado State Pueblo. That's CSU-P, NOT CSU. Big difference. CSU-P is division 2, and they havent had football for over 20 years!! They just decided to reinstate football ... and again they are in div. 2 and will be at the bottom of even that mighty group of programs. So, dont be so sure that even you cant run their program better than Wristen.
And Wristen is one of 10 finalists for the job. So, by no means is he a lock. In fact, Wristen, as Dohn pointed out above, has been looking for work since the END of LAST season. No one wanted him .. other than of course Dorrell, who naturally touted him as the next great assistant coach when he hired him. No one in college football thinks highly of Wristen. Nor, for that matter, do his wife and child whom he assaulted and beat 6 years ago (thats a fact, look it up!).
Before you get all emotional next time do some research and look at the facts. I think you will come to find that your assumptions and blind affection for Dorrell are making your A+ bruin fan credentials looking awfully bad. Dorrell is a caretaker of OUR football program. Its not his to own. He can and should be fired.

Dorrell situation is totally different from Lavin's. Lavin had tons of talent and wasn't winning. Dorrell has done well, not great with the talent he has had. I actually find "you people" no different than the stupid fans across the country who ARE ALWAYS CRYING FOR THE COACH TO BE FIRED!!!! Please see websites to fire Phil Fulmar, Llyod Carr,Kirk Fertenz and many others(they use the same reasons you do). DumpDorrell I wish you would stop by bruingold and post! There are hundreds of Ucla fans and I guarentee that you would get embarassed!!!! You Dumpdorrell people are a bunch of cowards. Hide behind your little website!! I will be at spring practice and I hope to run into you. And remember if you ever get the guts to go on bruingold we can talk Ucla sports anytime! I actually have a lot more to say too you( about Wristen, recruiting,etc...

A+ there you go with your emotional hateful response again ... dont bother using facts, they get in the way. "Dorrell has done well" you say. That's a big grey area word "well," and of course you emotional Dorrell loyalists never support your claims with facts. There aren't any facts that support your bold assertion that Dorrell has done "well." But forget that trivial issue, I and most Bruin fans expect more than "well" for $1 Million a year. Dorrell should be doing the job he was hired to do (win the Pac-10, play in BCS bowl games, and beat SC), the job he said he expected of himself. And he hasn't done it ... save for the lone miracle win against SC last year. Those are the facts. I would love to get paid $1 Million per year to not do my job and have blindos like you support me year after year.
Im noting the irony of you calling me a "coward" and saying that Im "hiding behind" my website while you post under a pseudonym. "Guts to go to Bruingold??" I didnt know that it takes such courage to register and post. But why should I follow you to another site to own you again? If you have more to say, I cant imagine how much worse it can get. All you do is spew emotion and hate while you blindly disregard all the facts about Dorrell. Im happy to stick to facts and thoughtful analysis while I claim loyalty to UCLA and not some coach.
Finally, I dont claim to have the expert knowledge about other programs across the nation like you apparently do. I dont know who should be fired or what, I'll leave that analysis in your capable hands. What I know is UCLA football and Karl Dorrell's stewardship of it. In his case, the facts and evidence are clear: Dorrell should be fired.
p.s. Spring practice is over.

Facts okay!!!
Dorrell has been beaten USC just as much than every school in the Pac-10 except Oregon(2).
In Dorell's tenure he has made it to a BCS Bowl or Rose Bowl just as many times as every other Pac-10 school not named USC.
Compared to USC every Pac-10 coached should be fired!!
The Pac-10 outside of USC hasn't done well against top 25 competition.
To possibly challenge for a championship in basketball you need 3 players. In football you need 30!! With you USC on its run it has been HARD FOR ANY OTHER TEAM IN THE CONFERENCE INCLUDING UCLA TO GET PLAYERS THAT CAN GET THEM TO THE ROSEBOWL!!!
Dumpdorrell, why hasn't any other team in the Pac-10 made it to the Rosebowl??
I know that is not your concern.
Dumpdorrell, why haven't the vast majority college football experts said that Dorrell is on the Hotseat?
I know you don't care what they think?
Please stop bringing up lavin. I wasn't a Lavin supporter. And about emotional and owning me...... come on man what are you... Twelve years old.
Bruingold would give you the oppurtunity to reach out to those who you claim to repersent. Fans and Alumni!
One of the biiggest problems I have with you is.... okay who is going to replace Dorrell???
You think Urban Meyer's, Pete Carroll's, and Jim Tressel's are available. Maybe Bill Parcells or Bill Cowher!!
I remember who the other canidates where when they first hired dorrell!
Mike Riley- he had a losing record last year and when OSU started out 1-3 fans were calling for his head.
Mike Belloti- His ducks got killed by BYU in the LAS VEGAS BOWL. Yes the Las Vegas Bowl.
You have a website dedicated to get someone fired and I'm HATEFUL!!!
See you at Fall practice! Recruiting is going great now( at least players like Dorrell)2008 class will be top 10!!!!! Ucla is starting to connect with local city players!
Ucla will start the year in the top 15! Everyone who knows anything about football knows Ucla will most likely finish 10-2 or 11-1.
GO Bruins!!!!
And all you haters can eat CROW.

A+ this is my last post to you, partly because Im sure Brian is tired of seeing this flame war on his site, but mostly because you are hopelessly lost and I dont have the time or desire to help you out any further.
I will just bullet as quickly as I can a response and wish you good luck.
1. In no way does my view of UCLA football have anything to do with any other programs, in the Pac-10 or in the nation. It's not surprising that Dorrell loyalists like you place UCLA football on the same pedestal as other Pac-10 schools like Oregon, Cal, etc., but it's still mind-boggling.
2. I, like so many other faithful UCLA fans, refuse to accept the premise that you and other fatalists to mediocrity constantly employ in defense of Dorrell that UCLA football cant compete against USC (in all the areas you mention). We have and we will again (once Dorrell is gone). You can't get it into your head that Dorrell HIMSELF expects it.
3. Unlike you and other Dorrell loyalists I don't need to look to the so-called "experts" to come to my own conclusion about our program. I am, after all, a UCLA graduate. Have you no critical thinking skills of your own? For the record, however, "experts" at both ESPN and Sporting News HAVE in fact put Dorrell on the hot seat this year. You can read all about it on DumpDorrell.com. We do keep a pulse on the MSM. Once again, do just a tiny bit of research before making such bold pronouncements.
4. Bruingold is a small website that doesn't come close to the volume or diversity of visitors to other Bruins sites like BruinReportOnline (Scout), BruinBlitz (Rivals), or BruinsNation, where I do post. Bruingold is like Bruin Romper Room ... where every day is a happy day ... where no one ever has a negative thought or word to say. Everything Karl Dorrell does, every decision he makes, is great. Its not exactly an intelligent nor worthy group ... nor are there that many people who go there. Hence, you're embarrassing lack of knowledge or critical thinking skills. I think our site gets more visitors than BruinRomperRoom.
5. One of the most idiotic arguments you can make is that there is no one better to replace Dorrell. Stop making such ridiculous statements and I will stop calling you a Lavinista. This has been discussed ad nausea on all those other sites. There are many great experienced winning coaches out there, do a little research. Here is a start, one of many discussions on the subject:
http://bruinsnation.com/story/2006/10/30/171134/22
Thats it, I cant spend any more time on you. You are going to have to learn on your own from here on out. Best of luck.
