Answers, Part II

Here is the second installment of answers.

Do you think we'll see any shotgun formations?
I think Ben Olson was really good in that foramtion in HS. Also, will ryan moya be ready for the season?
I think UCLA will use the shotgun more than most people think. Jay Norvell is a pass-first coach, and Ben Olson is comfortable in it.
And my pick is for Moya to red-shirt this season.

In the event that E. Scott gets let go by UCLA, is there cause for concern that the recruits Scott brought to UCLA would leave?
Since I like to answer each question, please see answer from the Part I section.

What do you think of Chris Meadows? Heard some buzz about him doing well in the 7-on-7 workouts. Do you think he'll crack the receiver rotation this year?
Meadows is doing well in the 7-on-7s, but I don’t see him cracking the rotation. He would have to surpass to many players to get there. Now, could I see him getting on the field once in a while? Yeah, but that does not mean he would get into the rotation.

For the upcoming season do you think the o-line will be a stregnth or weakness?
I’m going to say weakness. Chris Joseph is doing well in the transition from guard to center, but there isn’t much depth. Guys have switched around and it will take time for the communication and trust to be there.

Let's get off football for a moment and talk basketball - do you see us adding a 5th scholarship player in'08? - and if so do you think it will be an early commit such J. Morgan or will we wait and see if someone takes off during the season and offer in the spring?
I don’t see it because UCLA is already one over the scholarship limit, and I don’t think coach Ben Howland wants to go further over the limit. However, if the right person comes along, and he starts to get a feel during the season two players will leave, I think he would take it.

Without revealing sources, what is the process you follow when you get information regarding the arrest of a coach. Especially when that information comes at 6 a.m.?
Since arrests are public record and I’m a reporter, I call the police (or in the case of Eric Scott, the sheriff’s department)

How do you know when to run the story and how cooperative is the coaching staff with info? I think your work is great and I am curious about the process.
I run the story when I have it confirmed, and not a second sooner. I'll get beat on something before I get something wrong. The coaching staff is of no help, and here’s why. Most times they don’t know about. I spoke to several people about the Eric Scott arrest, and they didn’t know about it until my phone call.

If J. Morgan does not commit to UCLA, will Howland offer another post player for the 2008 class? If so, who will he likely offer?
Please see previous response.

Did Guerrero and Dorrell know about Scott's prior arrests? Their statements seem to be conflicting?
I’m so glad you asked this because it is a chance for me to state what happened. No, they did not know about them. In fact, the athletic department didn’t know about it until they were told by reporters, according to folks I deal with regularly and never (and I mean never) steer me wrong. There are no conflicting statements. Dorrell’s statements were about knowing Scott had a difficult background with gang violence and Scott’s family. He never said he knew about the arrests, but many people seem to be reading into his comments and believe he knew. He did not know.

1. I do think you should continue this. Very informative and balanced.

2. In your opinion, why does KD stay so married to the WCO? And even making it more complicated this season (from what I have read). It seems that is a receipe for disaster. The QB's have already said the terminology is more complicated. These are kids. Why give them something it takes an NFL QB a few seasons to understand. This is KD's year and I fear b/c of this WCO that our offense will be horrible and we will not win even 7 games. Then KD will be gone.

3. Why does it always seem like our O Line is just not very good (both in run and pass blocking)? It seems like they always get solid recruits.

Follow-up on the Scott issue:

It's my understanding that an employer cannot search-out a potential employees arrest record. Only felonies and misdemeanors are legally admissible for hiring decisions. Is that the case?

Thanks for clearing up the issue of what Dorrell knew about Scott's arrests. I would like to see Dorrell clear up that important point publicly, as a matter of record, because it was his public comments that caused the confusion and because Dorrell's declarations of running a clean program are so important to him and the AD that Dorrell himself should remove any doubt. Maybe you could ask Dorrell directly??
