Answers, Part III
Here's the third installment
Did UCLA ever show any interest in Duke Lemmens from Oaks Christian? If not, why?
UCLA did not show any interest to Duke Lemmens, and I have no idea why other than to say they must not have thought that highly of him.
why isn't UCLA showing interest in Domique Blackmon? Isn't he the second coming of Vince Young?
There are some academic issues with Blackmon, but I also don’t think the coaching staff is enamored with him as a quarterback. I think they like him more as an athlete.
What is the status of R. Sidney. Is he staying at Artesia or is he transferring to Fairfax? Also, what is his relationship with UCLA? I know we are actively recruting the Wears and Nelson, but how does Sidney fit in?
I think UCLA is trying to decide if Sidney does fit in, both as a player and an individual.
Has the much noted, soft attitude of UCLA changed significantly under Dorrell? Do you think the influx of City Section kids will have an impact on making UCLA a tougher program?
The attitude has changed greatly under Dorrell, partly because he forced it to change. Look at the two dozen or so players that left the program in his first two years. He is quiet and stoic and does not show much of his personality to the public, but he is a tough coach who will not take slacking off. I think the City Section kids could make a difference, but it is too early to tell.
During Dorrell's tenure at UCLA, he has seen an entire gaggle of assistants leave or be terminated. Is this unprecedented in college football to have this number of assistants leave a program? What are your thoughts on the reason(s) for these defections? Is Dorrell a very difficult person to work with? Is it the salaries? The school colors??????
I love the school colors part because I believe you either love the powder blue or hate it. Seriously, though, it is mostly financial. From what I understand, USC’s assistants still laugh at the salaries of some of the UCLA assistants. And if you’re a coach like D.J. McCarthy (and forget whether he is good or not because this is just an example), he was living 45 non-traffic minutes from campus, working 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the season making about $130,000. He is now at LSU, living five minutes off campus, with the chance to make twice as much and can live in twice the house for half the money. I think the carousel will continue, with good coaches leaving for jobs that are more family-friendly.
What are the chances that Kevin Love only stays one year? 50%-50%?
Right now I would put them at 90 percent to leave, but it’s too early to tell. Does he get injured? Does is struggle in Howland’s defensive system? Is he driven to win a national title? What will Darren Collison do, and does Love want to be at UCLA if it doesn’t have an electric point guard like Collison? And on and on and on.
Do you think we have a decent shot with Armond Armstead and any other 4* + recruits
Recruiting is so fluid that what is going on today could change tomorrow. UCLA can start out 10-0 and the most sought after recruits may fall in love with the Bruins. Conversely, a 4-3 start could make their committed players looks elsewhere. Remember, these are 17, 18-year-old kids we’re talking about.
I believe that you wrote recently that Ben Olson has looked good in summer workouts. How so? Has he gotten better in his decision making? Making decisions more quickly? I thought the criticism of Olson last year and this spring is that he tended to hold the ball for too long.
His footwork looked better, his release a tad shorter and his decision-making quicker. Now, he needs to continue to improve on all those aspects heading into training camp.
