A Passing

Burr Baldwin, who had his No. 38 retired by UCLA, died Monday in Bakersfield. Here is the release from UCLA:

UCLA GREAT BURR BALDWIN PASSES AWAY

Burr Baldwin, one of just eight UCLA football players to have his jersey number (38) retired, passed away on Monday night in Bakersfield. He was 85.
Baldwin passed away from cancer, which was diagnosed at Easter. He spent the last 50 years working as an insurance broker, finally retiring in early July.
He was UCLA’s first consensus All-American, earning honors in 1946, the same year in which he placed seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting. A three-year (1941, 1942 and 1946) letterman, he played in UCLA first two Rose Bowls, following the 1942 and 1946 seasons. As a senior in 1946, he led the Bruins with 18 receptions for 374 yards and three touchdowns.
He is survived by his two sons, Burr Baldwin Jr. and Michael Baldwin. Funeral services are scheduled for next Tuesday, August 28 at 9:30 am at St. Phillip the Apostle Church in Bakersfield (7100 Stockdale).

What are the other retired numbers/players?

According to the website "Bruin Gold," the other retired football jerseys are:

#5 - Kenny Easley
#13 - Kenny Washington
#16 - Gary Beban
#34 - Paul Cameron
#79 - Jonathon Ogden
#80 - The Rev. Donn Moomaw
#84 - Jerry Robinson

IMHO, jersey #18 should also be retired by UCLA as it was the number worn by Cade McNown who is the only QB to have a 4-0 record against the Trojans and it was also the football number of Jackie Robinson, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame...

All great Bruins, but I think Jackie wore #28 for the football team.

Brian, what do you think about un-retiring all jersey numbers in all sports at UCLA?
Two reasons I think this is a good idea:
(1) A great sports program/team should have a player worthy of number retirement recognition every year and there are only so many numbers available. Great players can be honored by induction to the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.
(2) Athletes that come to UCLA should have the opportunity to wear a number that may have been worn by one of their idols. The wearing of special numbers like 5, 13 or 80 can be earned by team captians, seniors or all-conference play.
