Answers, Part III
Here is the third installment of answers
Is the offensive line trying anything different this year scheme-wise? I know that Colletto emphasized "zone-blocking", are we still going to use that? Which of the backs is the best pass-blocker?
Most coaches use a mix of man blocking and also zone blocking. In talking with OL coach Bob Connelly, he wants an aggressive, punishing offensive line. He is not into finesse. As for pass-blocking backs, I think Chris Markey is the best when it comes to picking up blitzes and helping on double teams.
I remain perplexed by Jim Svoboda's performance last year. He was very successful as a DIV III (?) and DIV I quarterback coach, yet did an absolutely miserable job as the offensive coordinator. Can you provide any insights? I'm curious to know if coaching in DIV I vs DIV II or III really is that different, or if Svoboda simply had a bad year.
I don’t think Svoboda fully understand the complex offense, nor had a grasp of every aspect needed to be a successful play caller. And, yes, there is that much difference. The coaches, overall, are better at the Division I level. In many instances, like USC and Pete Carroll, Svoboda was going against some of the top guys.
What is your take on Connely's reputation? It seems Alabama was more than happy to see him go. What style of coaching does he employ, and how are the players responding to him?
As with any new coach, the players say they like Connelly. Time will tell since it is still training camp. I’ve heard similar things about Alabama, but coaching there is a different animal, and there was an overall dislike for the coaching staff. He wants his players to be aggressive and physical blockers.
Will Olson declare for the draft if he has a standout season and UCLA gets to 10 wins?
I think Olson would declare for the draft if he knew he would be a top 5 pick. Anything beyond that, I think at this time it would be a crap shoot.
With Ben Olson's determination/fire this year, do you think we are capable of putting up an average of 400yds of OFFENSE(not passing yards) per game? I think last year we produced only around 300 yds of offense per game. I think averaging 125-150yds on the ground plus 275yds to 300yds in the air would be a great improvement over last year. How likely do you see that happening?
This offense should be able to do that, but again, let’s see how Olson develops in camp. There isn’t much experienced depth on either side of the ball, and I think it will take some time for the players to get used to Norvell, and vice versa. I like the chances of it happening, especially early against weaker teams, but moving the ball between the 20s and getting huge chunks of yardage is meaningless if the red-zone offense is awful again.
Is there any chance of DumpDorrell Calling any of the plays this year?
I’m sure he would like that. And I’m sure many of you would be quick to criticize for some play calls.
