Meadows not Viney

Freshman CB Courtney Viney was with the scout team during the morning practice, and there is a reason for it -- walk-on Chris Meadows. The junior from West LA junior college has impressed the coaching staff during training camp, then was all over the place during the scrimmage.
Because of UCLA's depth at cornerback, the coaching staff is weighing whether it is worth having Viney ruin his red-shirt for special teams play, and also to be a very little-used corner. From what I'm hearing, the move right now is to red-shirt Viney, and use Meadows as a backup cornerback.

"all over the place" -- in a good way? or bad?

Since the coaching staff feels Viney may be able to red-shirt, I thought it was implied "all over the place" was meant in a good way.

This would have to qualify as being lucky if UCLA gets quality playing time from a JC walk-on in Chris Meadows. Viney will compete with Rahim Moore, Anthony Dye, and Aaron Hester for the starting spot in 08 opposite Al Verner so there are pluses and minuses in trying to redshirt him. Based on the depth, it is doubtful that a redshirt year can be saved.

I'm assuming that's in a good way, or else they wouldn't make the decision to make him a backup.

A better way to phrase it is to say he "was making plays all over the field"

Brian,

Have you ever seen this clip of Chris back in HS? He has the goods to be a playmaker. And I think this is why you got some inqueries about him contributing this season.
