Q&A time

I'll probably regret this given double sessions begin Saturday, but send in some questions and I'll answer them during the weekend.

Do you see Raymond Carter's injury as a blessing in disguise since he was one of the incoming freshmen who managed to squeak into UCLA academically? Will Ryan Carew get into those situations in which Carter would have been inserted?

What's the latest on remaining scholarships for 2008? That is, are we continuing to offer Hamani Stevens, Darrell Scott, etc. What are some of the rumblings, given the situation with Coach Scott and are there any possible 2008 decommits as a result?

Does it make sense for Keefe to redshirt this year? Dragovich could seemingly play some PF and we are loaded up front this year. 2 quick recuiting questions: Your prediction on whether UCLA signs a 5th recruit and if so who? Do we get Darrell Scott or would he rather be 7th string at sc?

Posted by: RH at August 9, 2007 01:40 PM

what is the deal with p.j. irvin? he came in as a four star recruit and seems physically ready to play but has not really seen significant pt. what are the coaches thoughts on him? yours?

Will the coaches move Christan Ramirez to TB?

Whatever happened to Junior Lemau'u?

Posted by: LA_Eagle786 at August 9, 2007 01:54 PM

Savage. What is your take on him? I thought he would crack the depth chart next year and maybe compete for garbage time this year.

DA drops charges against Eric Scott

How have the all-everything freshman looked? Did anybody stand out? Carter, Price, Sloan, Love, Viney? I know you said they are red-shirting except for Price (carter due to medical) but how do they look to your seasoned eye? A good recruiting class?

Posted by: Anonymous at August 9, 2007 02:49 PM

whats your favorite color??? Why is Dorrell still coaching after he tweaked Carter's knee? It was clearly Dorrell's fault......FIRE HIM NOW!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous at August 9, 2007 03:27 PM

Any chance Ware gets a look at RB? Wasn't he a star in High School at that spot?

Posted by: Bob at August 9, 2007 03:42 PM

Why do you let idiots like DumpDorrell post? I know it's America, but do you let deranged lunatics into a Chuck E. Cheese too?

Posted by: DumbDCBrewinNations at August 9, 2007 03:43 PM

what is the biggest position of need for the remaining scholies

Posted by: Anonymous at August 9, 2007 04:13 PM

What is your opinion of the academic standards for CAL vs. UCLA? Shouldn't all UC schools follow the same guidelines for new applicants? Has UCLA ever mentioned off the record of their displeasure? Will UCLA's commitment to a new "holistic" approach help Dorrell and company to get kids in that are borderline recruits.

Posted by: Dan at August 9, 2007 04:13 PM

how many more recruits do you think will be brought in for 08

Posted by: Anonymous at August 9, 2007 04:14 PM

Who do you think is to blame for the wasting of DJ's freshman year? Dorrell says he did not authorize McCarthy to send him in against Utah. Do you believe Dorrell? Did this play a role in McCarthy leaving the program? Thanks.

Will we see a lot of new formations and sets on offense this year? It appears that this is the case early on in practice, no?

Posted by: dawson [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 9, 2007 04:53 PM

Does it seem strange to you that coach Norvell is planning on doing his play calling from the sidelines this season? Do many (if any) OC's work this way? Can you ask him more about this and what his thinking is on doing it this way rather than from the press box?

Posted by: Bruin Brian at August 9, 2007 05:39 PM

Is the offensive line trying anything different this year scheme-wise? I know that Colletto emphasized "zone-blocking", are we still going to use that? Which of the backs is the best pass-blocker?

Posted by: Anonymous at August 9, 2007 09:29 PM

I remain perplexed by Jim Svoboda's performance last year. He was very successful as a DIV III (?) and DIV I quarterback coach, yet did an absolutely miserable job as the offensive coordinator. Can you provide any insights? I'm curious to know if coaching in DIV I vs DIV II or III really is that different, or if Svoboda simply had a bad year.

Posted by: Hardbruin at August 9, 2007 09:45 PM

What is your take on Connely's reputation? It seems Alabama was more than happy to see him go. What style of coaching does he employ, and how are the players responding to him?

Posted by: Hardbruin at August 9, 2007 09:47 PM

Will Olson declare for the draft if he has a standout season and UCLA gets to 10 wins?

Posted by: Trey at August 9, 2007 11:22 PM

LOL!!! @ DumbDCBrewinNation's comment/question...
I agree DumpDorrell is a joke...can anyone really take him seriously?

Brian, I don't know if you were around for the Cade McNown years where the philosophy was "you're going you run for yards, but pass for miles." But this year, with Norvell at the OC helm it seems like we will attack more with the pass. With Ben Olsen's determination/fire this year, do you think we are capable of putting up close too 400yrds of OFFENSE(not passing yards) per game. I think last year we produce about only 300 yds of offense per game. I think averaging 100-150yds on the ground plus 250yds to 300yds in the air would be a great improvement over last year. How likely do you see that happening?

Posted by: anon at August 10, 2007 12:50 AM

Let me get this one for you Brian.
Junior was kicked off the team almost from the start.

Posted by: Jerry Brockett at August 10, 2007 06:47 AM

sorry for the spelling mistakes for the post above...here's the corrected version:

Brian, I don't know if you were around for the Cade McNown years when the philosophy was "you're going to run for yards, but pass for miles." Well this year, with Norvell at the OC helm it seems like we'll attack more with the pass...and this means higher total pass yards average. With Ben Olson's determination/fire this year, do you think we are capable of putting up an average of 400yds of OFFENSE(not passing yards) per game? I think last year we produced only around 300 yds of offense per game. I think averaging 125-150yds on the ground plus 275yds to 300yds in the air would be a great improvement over last year. How likely do you see that happening?

Posted by: anon at August 10, 2007 06:47 AM

Brain,
Is there any chance of DumpDorrell Calling any
of the plays this year?

Posted by: Jerry Brockett at August 10, 2007 07:08 AM

How is UCLA doing with Darrell Scott? Are they still recruiting him hard given the commitments of Dean and Knox?
And what are the chances of Arthur Brown visiting UCLA?

Posted by: Vince at August 10, 2007 08:09 AM

Brian do see us closing ,08 with the dream I had a couple nights ago.? I see Arthur Brown committing to UCLA, then Darell Scott rides the wave and we close with Walker to bring in another dynamic player? Dreams are just that, howver this was preminition, a clear window to the future. We will shock the world

Posted by: bruinchamp [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 10, 2007 11:26 AM

How do you think the WR rotation will end up? Have you seen any 4 WR formations on offense or do you think they will be used? Also, other than Jay Norvell, what has been your impression with the new assistant coaches (Connelly and McClure)? Do you think that Connelly is more hands on than our prior OL coach?

Posted by: JBruin at August 10, 2007 04:41 PM

Has there been any talk of moving Christian Ramirez back to TB, considering the injury to Carter? I also recall that Aaron Ware was once considered a highly rated HS RB recruit.

Posted by: JBruin at August 10, 2007 04:49 PM

Any word on a visit to the Athletic Department from new Chancellor Block? What did Virginia's athletic department think of him?

And what is the Chancellor's role on football game days besides host a tailgate for the big donors?
