PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

A little lift

Erwin Letona, a 14-year-old Venice High student, received a boost by attending UCLA practice on Wednesday. Letona, who was diagnosed with Leukemia in June, was in the team's end-of-practice huddle. He got to meet his favorite player, Bruce Davis, and got an autographed football from the team.
``Having him out here was a sign of strength,'' Davis said. ``It's great to have fans, especially a kid likee that. I'm glad I can have an affect on somebody, and I like being a role model.''

Davis is Letona's favorite player, but he was wearing a No. 7 jersey, the number which belongs to Ben Olson.
``You've got to order that special,'' Davis said.
Letona's parents - Blanca and Erwin - graduated from UCLA.
Letona was a linebacker with Venice High. Since he's going through chemotherapy, he's now being home-schooled.
``This brought his spirits up so high,'' said Blanca Erwin. ```He's supposed to be having fun in high school, but he's having to take the year off.''
