A touching moment
I witnessed a very touching moment at Wednesday's practice. Former UCLA linebacker Justin London was there with a friend of his, Cody La Cala, a young man from Iowa who is battling to overcome a near drowning when he was 1-year-old. Justin told me Cody, who is confined to a wheelchair, is working hard on his speech, and also on standing and walking. I asked Cody who his favorite Bruin was, and he smiled big and said "Justin London."
Later, after practice, Bruins coach Karl Dorrell came over and posed for a picture, which made Cody's face light up. But that wasn't all. Dorrell than ran to get a football, emblazoned with the UCLA logo, autographed it and gave to Cody. Watching from afar, the smile, excitement and pure joy Cody showed is something I will never forget. It was the most touching moment of my career, and never did wins and losses seem so meaningless.

Sometimes, actually most of the time we forget what is most important in life and that is a great example. Not only is it wonderful for Cody, but i think it is great that Justin, after finishing his career has moved onto bigger and better things. And i think that statement cannot be more true than with the example Justin is showing. Good luck Cody in your recovery, and i know you will remember this day forever!!

What is Justin London doing these days? I thought he was on his way to being a great UCLA lb and a future pro, but he never seemed to recover from injuries.

Initially, as I was reading this post, I'm thinking to myself, "Jill Painter is really adding her feminine touch to this blog"...of course, upon finishing I see that Brian was the poster! Kidding Brian.
Awesome. I love stories like this that show the human side to these athletes. It makes me root for them even more...for success in career and life. Best of luck London and Cody.

Brian,
Just another reader, here, thanking you for posting that terrific story about Justin London, Coach Dorrell, and Cody La Cala.
It made me proud to be a Bruin.
Thanks again,

Justin London is a class act. I had the honor last year to meet him. We were tailgating watching the Oregon St vs sc game last year on the golf course at the Rose Bowl and a bunch of people were standing behind us and started to watch the game and wouldnt you know one of them is Justin London. He had nothing but good things to say about UCLA and the coaching staff. He was also really cool and was just like one of the guys. We offered him a beer or two but he declined. While watching he was telling us what was really go on in the game and taught us alot of things that we didnt know. He will always be a true BRUIN.

So many people are critical of Dorrell's on the field performances that they really forget that he is truly a class act.
I'm critical of Dorrell myself, but I never go overboard because I know that this is a man of integrity.

That was a nice story. CKD has always struck me as a pretty nice guy. I wish the best for Cody.

I wonder where the dumpdorrell.com and bruinsnation.com folks are when a story like this comes out? They link up BD's stories constantly, but pass on this one? Doesn't fit the narrative?
What a shame if that's the case. As a coach, I am not a big Dorrell fan, but this goes beyond football...

Gandhi is great too but I would never employ him as a head coach.
