PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Here is the fourth grouping, including a classic for the last one:

Where is Alexi Lanis fitting into the OL rotation now that Tevaga is out? In other words, how many plays do you think he'll get against Washington?
Tevaga being out has no bearing on Lanis’ playing time. Lanis plays tackle, and Tevaga is a guard. It is also hard to say how many plays Lanis will get because it is largely contingent on how well, or poorly, Micah Kia and Brian Abraham play in front of him.

Alteraun Verner has now been burned badly in each of the last two games for a long TD. Is he still starting over Van because of Van's ankle injury or is Verner now the starter regardless?
It is my understanding Verner is now the starter, and it has no bearing on Van’s ankle injury. However, Van will still get considerable playing time because in nickel situations, Verner moves over to the nickel back spot and Van plays corner.

Will Pat Cowan be biased and throw to his brother Joe Cowan most of the time?
It depends if they have a sibling spat over pancakes and eggs at the team breakfast.

How has Savage looked on the o-line thus far? Also, what is up with Tony Lee? Finally, Aaron Meyer is in his 4th year in the program and he has been relegated to street clothes for away games as I witnessed for the Utah contest. I think most would agree that's pathetic on so many levels including the coach's evaluation of talent and Meyer's own progression as a scholarship player.
First, Savage has done nothing noticeable on the offensive line. While he remains with the OL, he continues to work as a scout team defensive tackle, although, again, he remains an offensive lineman, and that is his future spot. As far as Tony Lee, I need to check with my sources to see if I am allowed to print something, so check the blog and/or paper next week. Also, I don’t see a question in regards to Meyer, but I cannot argue with the statement.

How is Brett Locket doing? Haven't seen an injury update on him in a while.
Lockett returned to practice and will backup Chris Horton at strong safety.

Will Ryan Graves ever see significant playing time at WR?
I doubt it.

How would you assess the oline under Coach Connelly? Do you think the oline play has gotten worse since Tom Cable left?
I think of all the position groups through the first three games, the offensive line has performed the worst. And I do believe the OL play has regressed since Cable left.

Is it standard procedure to cover the Rose Bowl field during a rain storm prior to game days? Will the field be covered this week at all?
I don’t know if it is standard procedure, but I was told if there was going to be rain, the field would be covered.

What is Mike Leach's home phone number?
Try 806-555-1212. At least, it's a start.

Is UCLA going after any men's basketball prospects to complete their 2008 recruiting class other than J'Mison Morgan?
Not really, but a foreign player could enter the picture.

Are you seeing any difference in UCLA recruiting under Ben Howland with Kerry Keating gone and Scott Duncan on-board? If so, what would those differences be?
Not yet, mostly because so much of the recruiting through 2008 was done before Keating left. It will be more telling in the 2009 class.

Just being silly, but if UCLA played Utah 12 straight weeks this season, what would you think the breakdown of wins and losses would be? I would say the Bruins would win 8 or 9 out of 12 based on talent, and based on how much more motivated the team would be the next time around.
I would say talent-wise, UCLA should win 9 or 10 times. But being UCLA, they would win a game easily, then take Utah lightly in the next game and lose. Then win a game easily, then take Utah lightly in the next game and lose. So on and son.

Should UCLA decide to fire Karl Dorrell, what do you think about hiring Carol Burnett as head coach? Don't laugh. Here are her qualifications, based upon what UCLA has considered important and looked for in previous searches:
1. UCLA alum.
2. Nice person.
3. Well-liked.
4. Great public speaker and media savvy.
Sure, she has no head coaching experience, but neither did Dorrell (or Larry Farmer, or Steve Lavin or Terry Donahue). Obviously, experience is not a prerequisite for head coaching positions at UCLA.
At least if she brought Tim Conway and Harvey Korman in as assistants, the Monday press conference would be a riot to go to.

Brian,

You hit the nail on the head with your assessment of UCLA's chances in a 12 game series with Utah. The real question though is WHY - why does UCLA play well, then take an opponent lightly and lose. I mean it is recurring theme, who do these guys think they are, I mean really - very few are close to being NFL players talent wise.

A little too snarky regarding Graves. What, did he flip you off in practice or something?

No, he is a very nice kid. So not to offend anyone, I changed the answer, though it has the same meaning.

Love the comment about Pat Cowan throwing to Joe Cowan and their breakfast spats! Had to laugh out loud at the office upon reading that one! Thank you.

I can't believe someone actually asked that question about Pat Cowan being biased towards his brother. Let's give Pat a little more credit than that.
