PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Answers, Part VII

Boy, losing 44-6 brought out a lot of people, and with lots of questions. Here is the response to the last installment of questions.
Also, please keep in mind, because the start of the game is so late, I will save a lot of the postgame blog stuff for Sunday. Thanks again for all the questions, and making this blog one of the top hits on the Daily News website.

What should UCLA try to exploit against Washington?
I would try to keep the QB in the pocket, and not let him get outside the tackles. I would also try to force him to throw the ball. Offensively, I would go after freshman CB Vonzell McDowell Jr., and make him cover all day long. It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to dump a pass or two off to the running backs. Ya’ know, that is allowed.

Lets talk about basketball. How have the workouts been going and could you tell us how each of the players has looked so far.
I know Kevin Love hasn’t worked out because he was in Oregon after spending the summer at UCLA. James Keefe cannot do anything. Lorenzo Mata had a leg issue so wasn’t doing much. As far as everyone else, it is one week into workouts, and when I talked with Ben Howland (who was out recruiting in the southeast) earlier in the week, he said everything was going fine.

brian, have you heard of HIPAA? Did you like Quincy as a kid? Is Jill Painter qualified to dx head trauma?
Yes, I’ve heard of it. And I also know UCLA asks every player if they want to sign an agreement so injuries can be discussed, and to my knowledge, everyone signed it. In fact, the only player I’m aware of in my five seasons covering UCLA not to sign it was Tyler Ebell.
Who is Quincy?
Ask Jill if she’s qualified. Jill.Painter@dailynews.com

brian, if price is the best DT UCLA has, why is he only expected to play 20 plays? seems like a dubious decision re: PT allocation....or is something else going on?
Because he is yet to take a college rep with his full equipment on. There is a reason teams go through a month of training camp to get in shape for a season. Price isn’t in shape to play a full game.

brian, do you ever re-watch a game on tape/dvr to get a better feel for what happened? coaches do it...
Yes, I do.

brian, what do you think of Olson's decision-making and sense of timing? the versus broadcasters (ex-nfl player?) made it seem like he thinks too slowly to be effective at the cfb level....
I think his decision-making needs to speed up, but I go back to something I said early during this Q&A. He has started eight college games in his life. That means he is in his first season as a starter in a very complex offense. He needs more time to develop, but nobody really wants to hear that.

With Tevaga, Olson, Everett, Whittington, Dragovic, Pitre, and Harwell what can we expect as a team in the UW game?
The only thing I expect is a strong effort, and for UCLA to play hard. Anything else would be awful.

How has Pat Cowan performed in practice? Has his accuracy as a passer improved? Who tends to make better in-play decisions when the football is in their hand, Pat or Ben?
Cowan has been ok. His accuracy, in my eyes, remains what it always was. Overall, if you are talking about practice, Olson makes the better decisions. Cowan throws more interceptions than I care to see.

Brian, thank you for making this blog THE PLACE I now go to for Bruin info and updates. I appreciate the balanced reporting I find here as opposed to the limited and biased information I see with the other papers.

Put me down as a new avid reader. Terrific source.

Talk a bit about Matthew Slater's role on special teams.
