PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Post practice

Thursdays are not the best days when it comes to juicy stuff. Practice is heavy on special teams and fine-tuning the offensive and defensive game plans. But the only piece of "juice" I have is sources are telling me defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker is leaning toward starting Alterraun Verner at cornerback ahead of Rodney Van. Still, Van is expected to play a significant role as well, the sources told me.
As for the practice, here's what coach Karl Dorrell said: "Good practice. We had a good one today, had good one yesterday, and we're getting ready to play a great game."

Are you sure it was Dorrell? Or was it just a hologram with his usual platitudes?
