PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Pre-cap and pick

Here is the preview capsule for today's paper. I do not believe it runs online, which is why I posted it here.

UCLA (3-1, 2-0 Pac-10) vs. Oregon State (2-2, 0-1)
Kickoff: 3:30 p.m., Reser Stadium, Corvallis, Ore.
TV/Radio: Fox Sport Net/570-AM
UCLA wins if …The offensive line keeps the pressure off QB Ben Olson by opening running lanes for the backs and keeping the pocket around him in the passing game. …The defense can keep Beavers TB Yvenson Bernard in check. He is not an electrifying running, but he is steady and knows how to move the chains. …It bucks the trend under coach Karl Dorrell. The Bruins are 10-13 in road games in Dorrell’s five seasons, and lost 7 of the last 9 on the road.

UCLA injury update: LG Shannon Tevaga (knee), QB Patrick Cowan (knee), DT Brigham Harwell (knee) and WR Marcus Everett (ankle) are out. B Michael Pitre (knee) is probable.

Oregon State wins if …QB Sean Canfield throws the ball to the correct team. He is tied for the nation’s lead with nine INTs. …The defensive front seven is too much for UCLA’s inconsistent offensive line. OSU is allowing 29.5 rushing yards per game. …The crowd rattles the Bruins, who admitted after a loss in front of 43,056 in Utah that they came unnerved and lost their poise because of the noise. Oregon State is expecting 42,000.
