PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Some quickies

UCLA coach Karl Dorrell said Rodney Van's injured ankle was doing better and it looks like Van will play against BYU.
Also, after looking at the tape, Dorrell was pleased with how UCLA played in all three phases -- offense, defense and special teams.
“I did feel better after watching the tape,’’ Dorrell said. “It was a pretty solid performance, really, with all of our phases. We definitely feel like we could have done even better, which is a good sign to have.
“We could have played better in all three areas, but just minor improvements , or things to correct, just to get better for this week.’’

That's great news about Van. Getting through these first few games without significant injuries will be crucial this year. Getting some blow-out wins is even better, since it gets our backups some valuable game time (and gets the starters out of harms way).

Brian, do you tape and watch the game as part of your due diligence?
