PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Thursday morning quarterbacking

Ben Olson isn't quite sure which hit in the Utah game gave him a concussion and maybe it was a cumulative effect. But it could've been the jarring hit he took when he fumbled in the fourth quarter, which begs the question: Should Olson have been playing that late in a game that was already decided?
``I think that's an opportunity to learn from a difficult circumstance,'' Karl Dorrell said. ``Sometimes, it's not pretty and you have to play and continue to play and compete. Sometimes, you have to play in some very adverse situations and get better and learn from it. He hasn't had many opportunities like that. He's still growing and learning as he goes.''

Olson went to the doctor after Wednesday's practice and was hoping to get cleared to practice today, but Patrick Cowan will start Saturday's game against Washington.

Of course he should've been playing. Did you see the game? The man needs all the reps he can get.

It would have been a good time to get MacBeth's feet wet. With Cowan coming back and Olsen sitting down, MacBeth still hasn't had game experience. He just might be a pleasant surprise!!

"He's still growing and learning as he goes?"

WTF? I know it's a new offensive coordinator and all, but hey, he's had all spring and summer to get the training wheels off.

Let's face it, Olsen is too indecisive and soft. Nice guy, but just isn't what we all thought he would be. At least now with Cowan we got some fresh blood, but given that he's coming out of an injury, he might be too rusty to make much of a difference in terms of performance between the two. At least Cowan is more mobile of the two.
