PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

« Scouting BYU-UCLA | Main | Verner starts »

Welcome to L.A.

Nice to see that with 33 minutes to kickoff, there are more BYU fans in the seats than UCLA fans. And I know classes aren't even close to starting, but it's good to see that at least 150 UCLA students showed up. Nice support.

And some fans wonder why UCLA doesn't get invited to play in bowl games east of Las Vegas?

Ucla students would give much more support with an on campus stadium.
Brain do you see Ucla building an on campus staduim?

That's becuase Bruins are allowed to tailgate

Brian,

The students that do go are outside drinking 33mins b-4 the game.

There were over 70,000 fans there, and the student section was pretty full. All in all, not bad for an early season game against a non-glamor team.

There were 72,000 fans in attendance. A vast majority loud UCLA fans. I think we held our own today.

We showed up at noon - but were tailgating until 3. We saw plenty of BYU fans walking past us, because they don't tailgate the same way many UCLA fans do. Unlike Dodger games, UCLA fans are there for the kickoff. We have a great camaraderie on the course, sharing food, talking to each other, having fun. Judging the fan support by the number of butts in the seats a half hour before the game is mistaken at best, disingenuous at worst.

BTW - classes don't start for almost three more weeks - not all students are local enough to attend! By game time, there were quite a few students, and the Alumni section was rocking!

Brian,

Looking back I think this may be a bit unfair if you were taking a shot at Bruin fans.

I thought there were many Bruin fans of the 72,000+ in the announced attendance. and there seemed to be more students than usual for a before-start-of-school game.
they were not there 33 minutes before kickoff though

Brian, you should probably wait until the game actually starts before making a post like this in order to avoid sounding like a douchebag. There were 73,000 in the Rose Bowl; BYU had a very good turnout, but the vast majority were UCLA fans. And although the student section is never completely full for the games that take place before classes begin, the section was actually quite a bit more filled than any other early September game in recent memory. It would probably be good to remember that the makeup of the crowd during the game is far more consequential than the makeup of the crowd over a half-hour beforehand.

I am not a Bruin fan by any means, but in all fairness, I was at a 2005 SC-Oregon game in the famed Autzen stadium, and I could not believe how the stadium was not half full 30 minutes prior to kickoff. Drinking seems to be the true national sport.
