PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Coffee and practice

UCLA had its 6 a.m. practice, and I can say it was neither scintillating or exciting. QB Patrick Cowan did very little, taking a couple throws on the side, watching practice, and then pretty much ducking every question asked about his ailing knee, his ability to play Oct. 20 against Cal, and how missing nearly two months of practice impacts his play.
Osaar Rasshan took snaps at quarterback, and said he would like to remain there even if the rest of the QB situation gets sorted out.
As I reported in today's paper, LB Reggie Carter will have surgery today on his knee to repair what is believed to be torn meniscus. Coach Karl Dorrell said the hope is Carter is back in time for the Cal game.
Also, backup LB Shawn Oatis will be out for a while after it was learned he cracked a vertebrae in his neck while playing on special teams.

how did osaar look? did forcier get any reps? was the team "dead"?

"Neither scintillating or exciting" perfect words to describe a Karl Dorrell coached football team. I hope at least the coffee was good Brian!

Dohn,

Why is everyone so worried about Ben Olsen and Pat Cowan...In my eyes they are both done for the season. Hasn't anyone seen them walking...there is no way either will be 100% till atleast December. The dream of Pat Cowan returning is a joke...he can barely walk let alone lead our offense vs Cal,ASU, OU or any other Pac 10 school for that matter. Osaar and Chris Forcier need to get 100% of the reps for the next 2 week. Dorrell likes QB contests he now has 2 contenders. I do see both of them playing this season. He also has to implement a spread or run and shoot offense to make these guys more useful.
Our WCO is a joke...it's never to late to change your offense if you still have a chance to win the Pac 10 and earn a shot at the Rose Bowl.

Of course Osaar said he would like to remain there - if he's QB he's ACTUALLY PLAYING...

I think we could all play quarterback if we're allowed to throw 4 interceptions and still receive praise from KD.
