PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Handing out compliments

Charlie Weis had this to say about UCLA cornerback Trey Brown, who was named the Pac-10 defensive player of the week for his two interceptions and eight tackles against Oregon State.
`` I think one of the reasons that people don't want to throw at him very often is because he's always - sometimes corners are around the ball but don't make plays. You look at this guy - he has three interceptions, I think, I don't know off the top of my head, but interceptions, pass breakups, hand on the ball, drives on a three step drop. These are things that are more typical of a pro corner than a college corner. He has very good ball skills and awareness, and he always seems to be around the ball.''

Brown was encouraged, but he's hoping there's more of that type of play in store for the Irish.
``I have a great deal of respect for Coach Charlie Weis and his coaching staff. Hearing that from a guy like him is a wonderful thing. That's a positive note you take for the rest of the season and throughout the rest of my football career. Hopefully, I'm going to give him a rough day on Saturday and make some more plays.''
