PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Howland on raise

Ben Howland was on a recruiting trip and had this to say from the Atlanta airport about his new raise.

``I’m just really happy and pleased and honored the way the university has treated me. I feel very lucky and fortunate to be where I am, to be working for ucla. We have a great team. I’m very excited about the future.''

UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero was unavailable for comment.

Seems like it makes recruiting a bit easier - although the back-to-back Final Four appearances don't hurt.
`` I’m not going anywhere, that’s what I tell our recruits. I hope to be here for a long time – as long as they keep me.''

You can't know how refreshing it is to have a coach who loves the school as much as Ben Howland does and alumni who are supportive at a school with very big expectations and a coach with expectations to match.

Go Ben Go!

Hey DG... open up the pocket book for a good FB coach too! Congrats Ben! (I'm dreaming I know!)

You should do the same for Karl Dorrell. Give him an extension. Let the recruits know that "we" (the school) will support him no matter what. Since it's close to impossible to recruit "great" players with high test scores and gpa's, I'll settle for what coach Dorrell is doing at my school.

Do the same for Dorrell?

Howland has rebuilt the program from scratch. He has led the Bruins to conference championships and two Final Fours.

What has KD done?
