PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Olson to have surgery

This is from UCLA. QB Ben Olson will have surgery on his left knee.
UCLA quarterback Ben Olson has a partial tear of the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee. As a precaution, Olson will have an arthroscopy on his left knee on Tuesday to check for a possible tear of the lateral meniscus (cartilage). An estimate on his return will not be known until after the procedure.

it was noted that Ben didn't want to talk to reporters. Can you blame the guy?
2005 hand injury prevents him from being named starter. DO has a great year in close games.
2006 knee injury knocked him out of the second half
2007 knee injury, comes back, another knee injured.

you really have to feel for the guy. Brian, you yourself noted that Olson's only been in 8-9 games. and it's too bad thees injuries have prevented us from seeing if he can be a good, or even great qb.

Not only injuries, but horrendous coaching and failing to put him in schemes that utilize his strengths have also prevented him from reaching his potential. They let the walk-on throw deep more times than Olson's thrown all year! It doesn't help that the offensive line's pass protection has been nearly non-existent. Why not utilize more roll-outs and play-action to buy him more time? I feel sorry not only for BO, but for the rest of the players who never got to realize their full potential because of Dorrell's "coaching."

Wow, that's really sad for him. I wish him a speedy recovery but this sounds like his season is done.

My heart goes out to Olson. Saw a day in the life segment about Olson on FSN before the start of the 2006 season. Seemed to be a super and sweet kid and the type of guy you would want as a friend and teammate.

Funny that Ben has been through 3 OCs. Same thing happened to Drew. Three OCs but the last stayed with him for two years and that seemed to have made some difference. At least he didn't have to relearn another playbook.

Comparing the criticism of both Drew and Ben, Drew got it much worse. I can only think of Cedric Bozeman as a player who has received worse criticism in the last few years. (Okay, maybe Ryan
Walcott).

It's been a series of bad breaks for Ben. I hope and pray for a speedy recovery, regardless of the situation. I know the guy was ready to chew nails on Saturday when he couldn't go back in. We obviously need PC to stay healthy for the remainder. We may need to get creative on offense; better late than never.

How is Pat Cowan coming?

God bless him and give him a speedy recovery. Two years away from the game took its toll (he lost his edge), and he may never be the QB he would have been because of that. Oh, let's blame Dorrell. Dorrell should never have let him go on his Mission.

check that. it was a concussion earlier this season that kept him out.
