Some Dorrell
After watching the film, UCLA coach Karl Dorrell said not much new jumped out at him. Here is what he said about what transpired with QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson in the game.
"For the first quarter and a half he played pretty solid, where there wasn't any big change in the score,'' Dorrell said. "You can tell his inexperience showed at times, a little bit later in the game, which caused, for us to make some mistakes and put him in bad situations. Unfortunately for us, we're trying to win a football game and we came up short in doing so and made a lot of mistakes both from a coaching standpoint and a players standpoint and we just need to get things fixed.''

Well, it's a relief that he plans to get these things fixed.

Dan Guerrero, only you can fix this mess!

Weren't we up 6 - 3 at one point? Didn't everyone else know that as soon as we lost Olson the defense would have to preserve the win for us? Isn't a final score of 6 - 3 better than 6 - 20? I'm not only disappointed at Dorrell but Norvell and Walker. Yes, Walker. Why didn't he knock some sense into Dorrell and say, hey coach, we can hold the Irish. "We are playing lights out." Does Football 101 state to ignore your defense's play?

We still have most of the same issues left over from the Utah game that have not been fixed. 11 more penalties, mostly self-inflicted, several were game changers. 7 turnovers, many were avoidable with decent play-calling.

BradleyBruin: This is exactly what prompted me to write to Guerrero right after the game. I can understand losing because of injuries, inexperienced backups, etc, but to still have so many penalties in our 6th game of the season - this is what points to a coach that cannot get his team under control...

From my point of view, only coaches made the mistakes. When does relying on your inexperienced backup QB to win the game for you make for good coaching? They put the poor boy in position to fail. Like I've said before, let him manage the game by protecting the ball and focus on run game. Maybe we get a lot of 3 and outs, I think we would have survived as ND could do nothing against our defense. Play the field position game, eventually we would break a run and make safe passes using play-action. It would make for ugly football, but as the saying goes "I'll take an ugly win over a pretty loss", though this loss definitely wasn't pretty.

THE WCO OFFENSE WAS NOT BUILT TO IGNORE THE FULLBACK
WE HAVE THE MOST PATHETIC OFFENSE IN THE NATION BECAUSE OF COACHES THAT DO NOT UNDERSTAND FOOTBALL NOR DO THEY GET MOTION, TRAPS, OR COUNTERS. NORVELL IS MOST LIKELY THE WORST OFFENSIVE MIND IN FOOTBALL AND DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THAT THE FULLBACK IS THE KEY TO THE WCO ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE A NEW QB IN NEED OF HELP.
PATHETIC COACHING. NORVELL SHOULD PAY BACK UCLA HIS SALARY, GO BACK TO NEBRASKA, AND RAISE CORN. HE IS NOT A FOOTBALL MIND.

I honestly do not know why I bother reading quotes from our Coach. All it does is lead you in circles, and when you're done reading, you're feel less intelligent because of it. Yes, we all know MBT was put in a tough situation, but I never saw Dorrell go up to his quarterback and give him some words of encouragement. If he's not actually coaching, or calling any of the plays, then why is he there? I honestly believe that if the players were out there calling the plays, we would've won this game, or at least converted a fourth and one by just bulling over their DL.
I'm not disilliusioned so as to think our football team will bring me the same kind of joy, and most importantly, PRIDE, as Bruin Basketball brings me, but I don't think Bruin fans deserve to be humiliated and mocked because of one coach's inability to adapt and.....coach!!!

Time and time again, I watch teams have a starting QB go down with an injury and a freshman backup takes over. Many times the freshman QB come out and throws to win the game. This usually happens for two reasons, the kid was recruited to come in and play at any time, and the coach has the kid prepared to throw passes. Neither happened this past Saturday. You and I can go out and hand the ball off. You must be able throw passes so defenses can’t keep eight to nine guys in the box. If anyone here thinks you could have won the game running every play, you must have forgotten about last season’s three and outs. I feel sorry for this kid, not because he played poorly, but because the coaches did not prepare him for what happened. If MBT is just not good enough, than Dorrell should not have him on the roster.

We need to get things fixed? DUH!! How many times is KD going to fall back on that lame excuse?? Coach Walker gets things fixed with the defense! Either elevate Walker to HC or bring in Rick Neuhisel!!

bruin-4-ever..
I'd much rather have Norm Chow with Dewayne Walker as DC

Mindless, pointless, drivel. The man has lost all credibility and I can't believe we are forced to stomach this sh*t.
