Some perspective
Just to give everyone some perspective on hoops coach Ben Howland's new contract. It's not like UCLA just signed him for seven more seasons. His old deal, which was announced July 2006, was a seven-year deal that was going to carry through 2013.
This new deal, also a seven-year deal, will run through 2014. In Howland's contract, there was a rollover clause for one year, albeit a clause that expired April 30, 2006.
I think the more significant thing is the increase in pay for Howland. He was guaranteed $1.2 million for this upcoming season, but will now be guaranteed $1.5 million.
At the end of the previous contract, Howland was supposed to be guaranteed $1.6 million. He will now be guaranteed $2 million in 2013-14.
So, it is basically a one-year extension with more money thrown in.
Comments
Brian,
How does the $$$ compare with other programs? I know UCLA has a reputation for not wanting to spend big on salaries for coaches . . . especially football. Does Howland's compensation put him in the top tier of other NCAA hoops coaches? I sure hope so.
Thanks.

Not sure how recent these salaries are, but heres a list of top coachs that'll give a good gauge where Howland fits:
Lute Olson - $1.4m
Ben Braun - $980k
Jim Calhoun - $1.5m
Mike Krzyzewski - $1.3m
Billy Donovan - $1.4m
Tubby Smith - $2.2m
Tom Izzo - $1.8m
Thad Matta - $1.8m
Lorenzo Romar - $1m
John Calipari - $1.3m
Problem is, Coach K can buy an estate in Kentucky, while Howland will have to settle for that 4 bedroom house in West LA.

Well, he lives in a nice house in Bel-Air. But I see your point about cost of living differences.
This was a nice raise, but still a heck of a bargain for UCLA.

Yes, but at the days end, coach K is still living in Kentucky!

With his new deal, Donovan is making $3m per year.

Correction on my comment on Coach K. Don't know why Kentucky entered into my mind, but it should've been NC.
