PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Walker and ND

Just as a refresher, one of the underlying themes to the UCLA-Notre Dame game is Irish coach Charlie Weis and Bruins defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker were on the same staff with the New England Patriots.
They are close, and in the offseason Weis approached Walker about leaving Westwood for South Bend.
With that in mind, here's something I wrote about it during spring practice.

Walker's decision: The offense looked out of whack learning (offensive coordinator Jay) Norvell's system, and the defense could have been in a similar situation if defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker didn't shirk off an impressive inquiry.
Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis tried to woo Walker to South Bend, Ind., in the offseason, but Walker declined.
``I never entertained it because it wasn't something I was interested in,'' Walker said. ``I feel like we have something going on here, and you look at it, and you move your family all over again and it's the same (position). I know Charlie. He's a great guy and all that was good, but I'm happy here.''
Walker and Weis were on the same staff with the New England Patriots, and Walker gained national recognition and respect for turning around UCLA's defense.
``This is a challenge enough,'' said Walker, who is from Pasadena. ``And this is home.''

ND, by stinking it up, robbed us of what could've been a great matchup. Now, I doubt many would be interested in the game...aside from ND and UCLA fans.

Bry,

I may be speaking out of place, but generally the entire nation enjoys it when ND gets a good beatdown. I guarantee you most if not all of our Pac 10 rivals will enjoy it.

I doubt a single tear has been shed for their demise other than their own.

Let's hope our team complies.

As banged up as Markey and Bell are, and as sporadic as our offense is, AND considering BO hasn't really been very successful, and UCLA's loss to mighty UTAH... we SHOULD handle ND at home, but with a Karl Dorrell team ANYTHING is possible! Good (usc) or bad!(Utah!)
