PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

And more Craft

Kevin Craft, the Mt. SAC QB who gave an oral commitment to UCLA, is a transfer from San Diego State. He must spend a year at a JUCO before he can transfer to a four-year school and maintain his full eligibility.
However, one huge advantage is he already has his associate's degree, and the plan is for him to spend plenty of time at UCLA this spring.
Although he cannot participate in spring practice, Craft can attend practices and be on the field watching practice. Therefore, he should be able to pick up plenty of information and be ready for August's training camp.

Brian,
I probably missed this somewhere, but when you say "full eligibility", does that mean he could redshirt a year? And if not, does he have a real chance to play next year, when both Olson & Cowan are seniors?

Craft went to San Diego State before transferring to Mt. SAC. As was explained to me, if a player leaves a four-year school, he must be at a JUCO for a year before transferring to another four-year school. Otherwise, he would have to sit on the NCAA-mandatated year for transferring from a four year school to another four year school. That is why Craft cannot enroll at UCLA until the summer.
