PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Facing ASU

I wrote a basketball notebook that covered a few different topics that ran in today's paper, but here is something Bruins coach Ben Howland said about playing Arizona State that did not see print:
“They’re really good. They’re an outstanding team,'' Howland said. "Like many teams in our league, us included, they’re fighting for an NCAA berth. They’re coming off two tough losses at home where they had a chance to win.
"(James) Harden is one of the best players in the conference. Just look at his numbers and what he’s been able to do as a true freshman. It’s really astounding. (Jeff) Pendergraph is playing great. (Ty) Abbott’s an outstanding shooter. He really played well on the road in their last road trip to Northern California. So it will be a very, very tough challenge for us.’’

Shipp is staying! thats great news, with him and westbrook we should have a solid back court again, not to mention the fab four coming in. this is great news.

Interpretation of what Coach said: I have to say ASU is good because I know they will read what I say. But in all honesty, we have no respect for that team.
