PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Good class but lacking O and D line. That could end up costing us... Talent and depth of talent at virtually every other position now looks pretty solid for a few years (on paper). I think next years team will actually have more talent at the 2 and 3 deep than this past year, except along the line. Kudos to KD and his staff for getting us off to a really good start and Neu and staff for keeping it pretty much intact.

If the class finishes ranked in the top 10 by most services, then the class can be legitimately termed "superb". As others have noted though, quality recruits in the trenches are sorely needed.

All these ratings services are obviously quite subjective. Who knows how an 18 year old is going to turn out over the next 3-years. Physically speaking, one is not a man at 18, and these kids are still growing and maturing. And, of course, how many kids turn out to be college stars. It is a big leap from high school to college.

Speaking of line play, I recall reading about Nebraska's great lines in the 1990s, and I used to think why is that such a big deal. I mean, aren't the running backs, ends, and quarterback the heart of a team. Well, the Huskers were the team of the '90s, and now I am not so naive-- line play is football.
