PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Stevens, Scott update

Looks like UCLA can forget about St. Bonaventure running back Darrell Scott. Coach Rick Neuheisel went to see him, but sources said Texas happened to be there, too, and UCLA was put off by that. Sources added UCLA pretty much decided to no longer pursue Scott.
Also, Neuheisel went to visit Hemet High offensive lineman Hamani Stevens and sources said UCLA made a huge amount of progress and Stevens is now a real shot for UCLA.

It would be great to get Scott, but with Dean(hopefully) committing, UCLA would have plenty of RB - Coleman, Knox, Franklin, Carter, Bell - talent for next year. Stevens would be a bigger get since he plays center AND it would take away from a conference rival.

If Scott himself orchestrated that scene, Texas already being there, what does it say for the kid's character? If Texas caused the problem, they fit right in there with the trojans - lack of class while recruiting.

Brian,

Why the misleading first line? If, as you wrote, "UCLA pretty much decided to no longer pursue Scott." then Scott can forget about UCLA, and not the other way around, right?

If D. Scott had invited TX to come over before Rick got there, I'd say Brian got the headline right.

Come on D Scott and family. You will be starting from day one with the best OC (Chow) in the country and in the biggest media center. After 3 years you will be the top pick in the draft and have a Heisman sitting on your mantel.

Come on now, didn't Price do the same thing last year?

He would fit well with this class and he could be part of something special. If he planned it out to have 2 schools show up, it doesnt make him look bad. NOW if in 3 years he hasnt lived up to the hype, then HAHA!

You're talking about a kid that transferred right before his senior year in high school. Allegedly because most of his offensive line was graduating and he didn't think he would get the yards, td's and notoriety during his senior year. That probably says enough about his character.

You're talking about a kid that transferred right before his senior year of high school allegedly because most of his offensive line was graduating and he was afraid he wouldn't get the yards/td's that he wanted during his senior season.

Why are people attacking Scott's character? Did Price do the same thing last year? No one is attacking his character!

Now I see why Chow hates recruiting. It takes a salesman's personality i.e. don't let the no's affect you, to do this job. Most of us don't have what it takes.

If I had all the pretty girls wanting to come over I would double book.
