PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Alumni report

We had some blog issues this morning, but hopefully all is fixed. That said, I was watching Santa Clara, coached by former UCLA assistant Kerry Keating, take apart San Francisco 87-55 last night and thought about the Bruins assistants under Ben Howland now heading their own programs.
Keating 14-13, including 6-6 in the WCC in his first season. Last year the Broncos went 21-10, and 10-4 in the WCC.
Ernie Zeigler is 11-15 (6-7 Mid-American Conference) in his second season at Central Michigan. He went 13-18, 7-9 last season. The year before he took over, CMU was 4-24, 1-17 in the league.
Chris Carlson is 15-9 at Division II UC San Diego, including 11-7 in the CAA, in his first season. The Tritons were 12-15, 10-12 last season.

I've read that Zeigler's son, Trey, is quite a 2010 wing prospect. Would help CMU's program immensely if Dad could convince son to commit.
