PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

K. Walker update

It is less than 24 hours to signing day, and just a quick update. It looks like Kevan Walker, the son of UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker, will wind up at Oregon State. The Beavers recruited him very hard, and from what I hear, he thinks he'll fit in very well with the personnel there.
Kevan originally committed to Minnesota but changed to UCLA. However, that was before the head coaching change, and the change in the offensive staff.

shocking stuff.. At Saturday's basketball game against Arizona, when Walker was introduced to the fans by Rick, he said something along the lines of he and his family are bruins.. I guess that doesn't apply to his son.

That is pretty pathetic. Can't even keep a coach's son. How horrible is it over there?

It's a good move for him, as I don't think he would get a lot of PT at UCLA. He is a good kid, and I could certainly see not wanting to play for your Dad. That would be kind of weird. Good luck KW.

I think we are a little tight with schollies, so this should work out well for everyone involved.

Surprising? No!
What this really means is that the father will be gone next season or as soon thereafter as he gets a head coaching opportunity.

Very curious. I assume that because Walker is a school employee, his son would have free tuition and therefor, not take up a scholarship. It would indicate that he didn't expect to see the field at ucla and, if that was the case, how was he given that information? It had to be a VERY delicate situation with his dad being a coach that ucla was so desperate to keep.

No, the free tuition for employees does not apply at state schools.

I don't think you can read anything into this as it relates to D Walker. Kevin walker was one of the lowest rated recruits in this class and was rated lower than 3 other committed receivers in this class alone, so its unlikely he would have played much. And he probably wanted to get away from the family, I know I wouldn't have wanted my dad looking over my shoulder the whole time I was in college. He would also have to worry about being credited with getting PT because of nepotism and not because he earned it on the field. This seems like the best choice for K Walker.

Careful fellas - let's not be hypocrites...

Remember Kevin Love choosing UCLA over UO?

Remember how we reacted to those fans that took it personally?

If this is Kevan's best opportunity to get significant playing time, let's be happy for our DC's son. Between Kevan and DeWayne - we got the one we need most.

Man, I know. Neuheisal, Chow and Walker, a top 10 recruiting class and a top 5 basketball team. It's pretty terrible over here -not sure how we stand it.

I coached my own son in high school not much fun for him. He had to be much better to play because people thought he played because of me. He needed to go to another school good for him.

John Wooden had more than a little influence on this. Neuhiesal got some yoda from him on the matter and then went to Coach Walker with the news that a bad seed in hand is the flower in another garden, that talk. Coach Walker just wanted the press to lay off and so agreed. Walker junior may yet end up at SC, (stranger things have happened) but it wont be for a lack of stars.

The coaches-go-round swings a full 360 and what pete wants pete gets. In this case what pete wants will be what lil ricky wanted. Its a scummy game but you dont just play it to kill you play it to WIN. The big fish has to eat the little fish when it swims in front of him. Otherwise he wouldn't be the big fish. Anyway, both programs will have new coaches within 3.5 years.
