PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Knox update

I spoke to Birmingham High of Lake Balboa running back Milton Knox a few minutes ago, and he said he was so impressed with his trip to Notre Dame he is heavily considering the Irish over UCLA.
"Right now I don't know,'' Knox said. "It's a hard decision. I want to say I'm going to wind up at UCLA. But Notre Dame is the school I grew up rooting for."
Knox said he was blown away by his visit to South Bend, Ind., where he toured the campus, visited the famed Basilica and ran out on the field. He also attended the basketball game against DePaul.
"The student section was chanting my name,'' Knox said. "It was great. I was signing autographs and taking pictures with people. I didn't think it was going to be that good."

Brian, could you call Milton back and remind him that, Notre Dame's football program is, you know, in the toilet?

Stan said:

If Knox commits to the irish, it has to be for the competition already at the running back position at UCLA. Dean committing makes it easier for him to consider another school, along with the competition from Carter.

Billy and Stan both make good points which I agree with also. I would love to have Knox but I'm not going to lose sleep over it. We got the guy I wanted in Dean and Franklin if given the chance will shock some people.

So this all means Knox will be a Bruin :)

Bruin Billy: Can you tell me who one of Notre Dame's wins were against last season?

Can you tell me where our O-Line was that game?

Can you also tell me who our OC was?

Can you also tell me who our Head coach was?

I cannot believe what I'm reading from Bruin fans. Milton Knox go elsewhere? To ND? No way man! Knox is going to be at UCLA and every Bruin fan should want the #1 All Time City Section rushing leader. Milton is a stud. No Notre Dame and no talk of Milton being afraid of competition.

C'mon Milton, quit messing around. You're wanted and needed in Westwood. Wednesday, I expect your signature committing to UCLA.

After visiting Indiana in the dead of winter and he's strongly considering going there?- more power to him.

Kal smacking on UCLA?!?!?!? Too funny. I thought you were busy re-arranging the deck chairs on your sinking ship. Way to finish off a promising season with losses in 6 of your last 7 regular season games (including an embarrassment to 'Furd). And that on top of being a boneheaded call away from being ranked #2 in the country. Good thing that travesty was halted before the Pac would look any worse. Now, why don't you go back and try to remember when the last time Cal won a Rosebowl. My guess is you probably weren't alive then. I'm 42 and I wasn't.

We would LOVE Milton Knox on our team. He's the real deal and he would help lay the foundation for large scale future success at UCLA. In any event I wish him the best.

But with that said, Pull the trigger on UCLA Milton! I loved UCLA...tremendous school, outstanding academics, amazing sports tradition (100 national championships, Jackie Robinson, Arthur Ashe, etc. etc.). Oh yeah...and UCLA isn't nationally despised like ND. No one (except domer fans) wants a team forced down your throat by NBC. Getting into Bowl games just because of name recognition not only upsets true college football fans...it leads to really embarrassing defeats on a national stage because of certain teams not deserving the Bowl bids they get.

Help bring UCLA to the mountain top Milton!!! Anyway, that's it.

Signing day should be fun!

We'll if that's where he wants to go, then I wish him the best. Luckily we have some talented guys coming in. I would love to see him in a UCLA uniform but if that's not his wish, then so be it.

The Times seems to think otherwise.

"UCLA appears ready to not only tie up its long-committed recruits, but add some outstanding additional signees Wednesday.

Information received today indicates that Parade All-American running back Milton Knox of Birmingham High School is going to sign with UCLA, even though he took a trip to Notre Dame in late January."

Obviously most (if not all) of the bloggers have never visited Notre Dame, the campus, and the surrounding area. In the Winter or the Fall the place is awesome. There exists a spirituality that will not be found anywhere on a ucla campus.

Stan--

I doubt he would be going to ND because of the comp at UCLA- look at Jonas Gray, their #1 RB recruit-... I do hope we retain him, but ND has a nice tradition. It would be hard to fault someone for wanting to play hoops at UCLA over ND, largely based on tradition.... But, we will build our own football tradition at UCLA!

Bruinmo said:

So Lawyer John,
why don't you indugle us all on the "spirituality" that exits on the SUC campus and its very own beautiful surrounding area...

ND in the toilet? That's funny coming from a Bruins fan. Can't fill your stadium (which is a 30minute drive-if you're lucky from your school), lost to Notre Dame 2 years in a row (even in our worst year), UCLA has been to zero BCS Bowl games in the last 8 years, ND has been to 2 in the last 3 years. Facts are everything and you saying ND is in the toilet is definitely the pot calling the kettle black!

Soooo what were the scores of those BCS games ND played in? just curious...

Sam G. said:

Bruinmo -

I don't recall the scores, but the outcome was the same as ucla's last two fiasco's at the what-ever they were called bowls you fools played in.

ND may be down now, but at least we've been on top before. Something you pastel wearing public school kids will never accomplish.

Bruin Billy said:

Yea! AWESOME comeback Sam G! You're the BEST!

By the way, thanks so much for taking the time to post on a board that has nothing to do with your school. Please keep it up.

People, please. Why the hostilities? I'm sure Mr. Dohn doesn't mind if ND fans take the time register and comment on his blog. Traffic is good. I'm here because ndlna.com linked to this blog.

Three comments:

1. Knox will be happy no matter which school he chooses, as both schools are class acts (as oppossed to USC, which we can all agree is the New Jack City of college football).

2. ND is a special place. Spent a lot of years there. Its hard to describe, but if you've been on campus, you know what I mean. Something in the air, I suppose.

3. ND did tank last year. But please, Bruins, fans, no trash talking - we did beat you both times we met. Brady Quinn and Maurice Crum Jr. send their regards.
