PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Quick hitter

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel said he thought at least one of the running backs and one or two of the defensive backs that signed today would likely be needed to play as a true freshman.
Neuheisel also said the reason he took three quarterbacks, despite all being in different classes, is to protect against possible quarterback transfers for somebody that does not win the starting job, especially since Patrick Cowan and Ben Olson will also be entering their final season.
Running back Milton Knox still needs to make his announcement and Neuheisel was asked if there was a chance another player could be added to the class.
"I'm going to remain optimistic,'' Neuheisel said.

"transfers for somebody that does not win the starting job"???

Since Cowan and Olsen are seniors they are not going to transfer. They also know they are only one hit on the other guy from starting. Rick also can't mean either Oscar since he is going back to WR or Crissman since he is an incoming freshman (who will redshirt). Clearly he is talking about Forcier.
