PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

The get-together

If UCLA's 2008 class helps win a Pac-10 Championship, Wednesday's gathering will go down as a pivotal moment. Jerry Johnson's parents invited UCLA's recruiting class to their restaurant for the signing day and 13 players went. Even Nelson Rosario - who's from Oceanside - drove up for the occasion.
``We did it because of the roller coaster ride these kids and their families have been on,'' J.C. Johnson said. ``The kids were committed, even with all that was taking place. They have such a great recruiting class. It was the right thing to do. We looked at it as this was a moment in time that's locked in history.''

Congratulations to the kids and their families on what is sure to be a memorable day. I'm hoping this is indicative of their selflessness and their willingness to represent UCLA on and off the field. Let's see if they can bring new meaning to "Gettin' Served"!!!

To the incoming class, much gratitude should be given and owed for having made their decisions, considering how uncertain things would be staff-wise. For their own reasons, they wanted to be Bruins. Now they are.

These kids and their families deserve a hearty welcome to The Bruin Family. They've endured a lot, and I hope for the best for all in making strides toward their goals.

GOOOOOOO BRUINS!!!
