PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

UCLA moving up in the polls

Top-ranked Memphis lost to Tennessee, and top-five teams Kansas and Duke also lost. This means that UCLA will jump from No. 6 into the top-five, but the question is how far?

I think the Tenn will be #1 and swap with Memphis at #2 (won't fall much given only one loss).

Then, considering Duke's and Kansas' losses, I think ULCA will move up to 4th place, unless of course UNC losses later today, and then UCLA could go up to #3.

Jill-

Perhaps you should be directing that question to Brian, who has a lot more to say about it than any of us! :-)

That said, my prediction is that Tennessee and Memphis will switch slots, so the top 5 should look like one of these two scenarios:

1. Tennessee
2. Memphis
3. UCLA
4. North Carolina
5. Kansas

OR

1. Tennessee
2. Memphis
3. North Carolina
4. UCLA
5. Kansas

JMHO.

My guess, assuming UNC does not lose tonight:

1. Tennessee
2. Memphis
3. UNC
4. UCLA
5. Texas

Just as long as Kansas is behind UCLA..GO BRUINS

Bruins probably should move to #4 though I think they are better than UNC, even with a healthy Lawson. USC should have beat them in the tourney last year but for the Trojan lack of depth. UCLA/Howland would manhandle them in a tournament setting.

I have to agree w/ PLH55, I believe UCLA is better than UNC. I've seen UNC play in person a couple of times and not at all impressed. They do have some quickness, but no one in the ACC plays the kind of defense UCLA plays. Hansbrough is good, but he has never seen the kind of defense Howland would have ready for him. I for one would love to see UCLA get a shot at UNC in the NCAA Tournament!
