Answers, Part I
Thanks for the questions. There will be six sets of answers today, but before I get to those, if you'd like to ask questions today, do so, and I will post answers Saturday before the 3:40 p.m. tip-off against Xavier.
Now, onto the first set of answers:
In the paper, you quoted Western Kentucky’s coach as saying UCLA “is recognized as one of the five or six best programs in the country in college basketball traditionally”. Where specifically do *you* rank UCLA ‘in college basketball traditionally’?
It’s very difficult and subjective when trying to rank teams. UCLA won 11 national titles, but 10 came in such a dominating and short span that, in my opinion, means I cannot overlook the rest of the time UCLA won one national title. Looking strictly at consistency of a program from start to finish, Kentucky and Kansas come to mind.
That said, I think UCLA belongs in the top three or four, not five or six.
Has Coach Howland indicated why Keefe has passed Aboya on the depth chart? I like the minutes Keefe has put in but Aboya has played a key role on two Final Four teams including the Championship game two years ago. Does he feel Keefe is more capable of producing offensively?
It is because Keefe was practicing better, and performing better in games. Even before his performance against Western Kentucky, Keefe was playing more aggressive, rebounding better and not committing as many fouls. Quite simply, Keefe is playing better in all facets.
Occasionally there are basketball recruits who don't seem to deliver as much as had been expected when their time comes. Do you have any explanation for this as a systemic/recurring problem at UCLA? As an example, would you say the players are overly restricted to certain roles and limited from stepping outside those roles by the coaching staff?
UCLA coach Ben Howland has an idea of how he wants to use a player, and that is how he is going to use him. If he believes a player is capable of doing something that is not being showcased in a game, he will attempt to make the adjustment to make that happen. I wouldn’t say players are “overly restricted’’ because I believe Howland will do anything he can to make his team win. But I do think the players are “restricted’’ to what Howland believes each player does well.
In your Q&A answers, you mentioned Duke's lack of inside presence as a problem. How close to the UCLA teams of the past two years were they in that aspect? Before they exited the tourney, had you considered Duke to be weaker than those two Bruin teams?
Duke did not play defense the way UCLA did in the last two years, on the perimeter or inside. Two years ago UCLA had Ryan Hollins as a shot-blocking threat, and last year Lorenzo Mata-Real and Alfred Aboya were inside knocking opponents around. Plus, Duke didn’t have the type of perimeter defenders UCLA had the last two years. And, as far as Duke this season, if the school wasn’t named Duke, I think it would have been a No. 4 or No. 5 seed. Duke was markedly weaker than the last two UCLA teams, and I never thought the Blue Devils would get to the Sweet 16.
I know your focus is on this year now, but have you had any discussions with Howland about next year's squad? Since we most likely will lose Love do you think we will see 4 guard lineups (like he used at N. Arizona) with Shipp playing power forward? If Love, Collison and Westbrook all declare, who do you see as the starters next year (I know it's hard to project the freshmen)?
I’ve talked to him a little bit about it, but not in depth. I think he will play three guards (if you consider Josh Shipp a guard) with Luc Richard Mbah a Moute playing power forward and Drew Gordon and Alfred Aboya sharing time at center. The backcourt will be Russell Westbrook and Jrud Holiday. And I don’t see Westbrook leaving, especially after his last two shooting performances.
Do you think the Hilltoppers' mascot is the evil twin brother of Grimace?
Oh, man, poor Grimace. Love that dude. Reminds me of being a kid and eating cookies for dessert from Mickey D’s. Frankly, though, I like T.J. Simers’ line of calling the mascot a pregnant Elmo.

This is

Pregnant Elmo?!@#$%^&*()
What the ?!@#$%^
Is that what they call the "Immaculate Conception?"
Thanks for the humor Brian!
I would throw James Keefe into the mix as a possible starter in the front court next year after his performance against WKU.
Do you think Xavier was watching the WKU game, and will employ the same type of full-court press? And if so will we be ready for it this time? And does Xavier have anyone to match up with Love?
I know everyone is all caught up in the tournament (including myself), but i wanted to switch gears and ask about football. BRO recently interviewed D Walker and he was talking as though Norris had the other corner spot locked up. I had the impression that Viney and Hester were going to be given the opportunity to win that position. Did something recently just change or was Norris penciled in all along?
I know you've stated that Jrue Holiday is going to play around 30 min/game and Gordon is also going to get his share of pt. I haven't heard anything on Malcolm Lee other than he needs to get stronger. Is he going to be another Stanback in terms of not being ready as a freshman? Or are there plans for him to contribute next year?
Have you ever seen a scouting report such as one put together by an asst coach like Donny Daniels did for Xavier? Are you able to give a general idea of what it might look like, the different sections it may have, how much is summary or overview, player assessments/tendencies, etc? Would the scouting reports differ during the tournament than those during the regular season against non-conf opponents, considering there is far less time to prepare?
Has Neuheisel told you what he expects of Raymond Carter this year? Is he looking to give him some carries or is he going to wait another year to let him recover fully from his knee injury? Basically, what are his expectations for him this year?
In your opinion, if I may paraphrase, UCLA is not *the* top basketball program because of a lack of consistency throughout the non-Wooden years … or, you ‘cannot overlook the rest of the time UCLA won one national title’. Do you consider SC to be one of the top 3 or 4 programs in football? Does SC also lose points for a ‘lack of consistency’ in the early 90s (other than consistently losing to UCLA’s teams)?
Mbah a Moute and Aboya haven't improved in the last two years, and you could even say that they looked better as freshman than they do now. Any idea why that is? Could it be their work ethic? Are they just too raw as basketball players and don't have the natural skill like some others do?
How are road roommates chosen for basketball? Can you list them all? Thanks!
Brian,
Who do you think will win tomorrow and what do you think the score will be? How do you see the game playing out? For example, do you see Collison being locked down because of Burrell and do you think that will be the X factor? Basically, what's your take on tomorrow's game.
In your story titled "Sweet Escape for UCLA" about the UCLA/Texas A&M game there is a quote by Kevin Love that caught my Attention:
"Believe it or not, Ben doesn't like me to shoot fallaway jump shots"
Not too often you hear a college kid call his coach by his first name. Do you ever get the sense that Kevin doesn't have the respect for Coach Howland that he should?
In the two games he's played in since his ankle injury, Luc has turned the ball over a lot. Whether he is traveling, throwing weak passes or getting the ball stripped do you think he should sit out? I admire his heart, courage and toughness but at times he seems like he is hurting the team more than helping.
