Answers, Part V
Here is the fifth set:
Reportedly, UCLA Football has been on bad terms recruiting Mission Viejo players since a dispute with Coach Bob Johnson, over his son, Brett Johnson's (QB) transfer from UCLA to Michigan State. Are UCLA coaches still persona non-grata or are they welcome on the MV campus now?
I did a big story on that a few years ago, but the relationship is patched up as evidenced by UCLA getting several players from Mission Viejo, including the Moline brothers in years past and Jeff Baca in the 2008 class.
USC has had a pipeline to Mater Dei and good relations with Coach Rollinson. Can Coach Neuheisel make any inroads in getting Mater Dei kids?
I always got the idea that was going to be tough to do, no matter who UCLA’s coach is, because I always got the idea Mater Dei was a strong USC feeder.
Coach Dorrell was the first UCLA Head Coach to ever set foot on the Long Beach Poly campus. Do you think Coach Neuheisel will uphold this tradition and make Poly recruits a priority?
His priority will be to go anywhere he believes a worthy recruit plays. It could be Long Beach Poly, it could be Iceland.
What are your favorite, and least favorite, Pac-10 cities to travel to, and why?
I love going to Cal because I love San Francisco and Berkeley, the band is the best in the Pac-10 and the atmosphere for games is always tremendous when UCLA is in town. The worst is Pullman, Wash., because it is a difficult, long day to get there, the weather makes travel dicey and there is very little to do during down time.
I watched UCLA play Kansas State a few years back in baseball. When talking to some of the parents of the players they where complaining about Jackie Robinson Stadium and how run down it was, for carrying his name. Is there any plans to fix it up or have the already done it?
I know they’ve done some improvements to it, but they all didn’t take. For instance, a new field was put down, but it doesn’t drain well, which is why one of UCLA’s games was postponed early in the season and another was moved.
Does UCLA plan on doing any special promotions where the fans all wear white or blue to games??
Not that I’m aware of.
How sophisticated would you rate Bruin fans, when it comes to sports knowledge and history, compared to other fan bases across the nation?
The hardcore fans are an knowledgeable as any in the nation, but beyond the hardcore fans I don’t think the average fan is tuned in very well, mostly because they do not care to be since there is so much else going on in Los Angeles. In most other parts of the country, the local college team is the only game in town, so it is talked about constantly. In L.A., with so much to do, the only time the non-hardcore people seem to really care is when a team is doing very well, or very poorly.
Do you enjoy the Friday Q&A, or do you view it as a penance, chore or necessary evil of work?
I enjoy it because it forces to think of other issues, and varying sides of an argument. Plus, it allows me to voice my opinion on several topics, and a forum to get a pulse on what fans are thinking.
"I love going to Cal because I love San Francisco and Berkeley, the band is the best in the Pac-10 . . ."
Brian, are you tone deaf?
I agree on your take on the fans. After last night's huge win giving us the 3rd straight Pac-10 title, I came to campus wearing my jersey. I had hoped people around campus to get the buzz, talking about it, rocking UCLA hoops gear etc., but it was pretty much quiet.
