Defense, Defense

Aside from the 58 points UCLA allowed in the second half of the Western Kentucky win, the Bruins' defense has been stellar during the NCAA Tournament, culminating with the 56-point performance by Xavier in Saturday's regional final.
"We're peaking at the right time,'' UCLA point guard Darren Collison said. "This is right where we want to be defensive-wise. Coach (Ben) Howland has done a good job of stressing it to us about our defense all season, and that's something we're going to be targeting these next two games."

I like DC's confidence, "these next two games." Stop the dribble drive penetration by Memphis with fast feet and quick hands, go to the D glass, box out and we will win. It does in fact come down to defense now, 38 games into a long season and, other than that let down against WKY in the second half, the Bruins are into it. Go Bruins!!

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
