Lack of attack

There was a consensus among UCLA players and coaches about what went wrong in the second half against Western Kentucky's press.
"I thought we got tentative instead of being attacking,'' UCLA coach Ben Howland said. "When we attacked, we did a good job. We had a lot of opportunities in the first half. I am like an old-fashioned guy. I like the jump-stop. You never see it in the NBA, so it is hard for the players to watch those guys and go, 'that's a great play.'
"But the jump-stop sure helps against teams that press and pressure."

Hate to display my ignorance, but what is the "jump-stop"?

Couldn't agree more. Looks like we were trying to mike the clock and hold onto the lead, which you can't do against the press.

A jump stop is when you dribble the ball, stop abruptly, and take a jump shot. It used to be done quite a bit, but not so much anymore. It penalizes people overpursuing on defense.

To add a little more, Howland likes his players to also pass after a jump-stop.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
