PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Mata-Real to start

Keeping with UCLA coach Ben Howland's tradition since he's been at UCLA, senior Lorenzo Mata-Real will start at center Saturday against California since it is the last home game of his career. There is no word on whose spot he will take, but the odds-on-favorite is freshman Kevin Love's spot.

He should take Shipp's spot after the way Shipp played yesterday (or the past month). Also, It's probably Love, Collison, and possibly Westbrook's last game at Pauly as well so none of them should sit.

I have no problem with any of the regulars NOT starting so a senior CAN start. It doesn't matter if it MIGHT be the final game for Love, he's still a freshman. Unless Howland wants to start big against Cal's tall front line, in which case Luc could sit, I think it's appropriate for Kevin to sit while Lorenzo gets the start. Collison and Westbrook are back-court starters, so Lorenzo wouldn't displace them anyway.

The only special recognition that should be given to non-seniors like Kevin, Darren, Russell, etc., should be chants by the crowd of "One More Year! One More Year!"

Good for M-R. He'll deserve every starting minutes he gets. He'll go out w/ me remembering his class and determination.

Thanks Lorenzo, and Matt too.
