Mata-Real's farewell
I didn't get to it after the game, but I wanted to at least relay UCLA center Lorenzo Mata-Real's thoughts after he played in his final game at Pauley Pavilion.
"It was great. It was emotional,'' Mata-Real said. "I've never heard an ovation like that before. It was great, especially coming out with a victory at the end. It was nice. I'd like to thank Josh( Shipp) for that."
Did Mata-Real cry while walking out with his mother, Reyna, and UCLA academic adviser Kenny Donaldson during the pregame ceremony?
"I almost did, but I didn't,'' he said. "I think my mom wanted to cry more than me, but we both held our tears. It was what I thought it was going to be. I remember what it was when I was a freshman and there were seniors here, and I remember them getting teary eyed. I was hoping I didn't get teary eyed."
Lorenzo has made a lot of contributions to the success of the UCLA basketball team during his four years.
On the subject of senior farewells, when Ed O'Bannon bid his adieu he got down on his knees and kissed the Pauley Pavilion floor. With his brother Charles and his parents standing by, the student section started chanting to Mr. & Mrs. O'Bannon, "Have more kids!"
Maybe the chant will be repeated if Josh Shipp's parents accompany him for his senior moment.
