PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Brian, do you eat Nachos when watching sports?

cxcbruin said:

What exactly happens at these Junior Days? Is it just a fancy meet/greet thing with the coaches?

Mario DiLeo said:

Whatever happened to Eyoseph Efseaff? This was the lineman from central California who could not play on Sundays due to his religion's tenets but ended his UCLA career getting kicked off the team for showing up drunk for a meeting before one of the Vegas Bowls.

Brian, in the past you've criticized the BB team for its overall lack of "athleticism," something that could stand it the way of banner #12. What exactly do you mean?

Rank the top 5 coaches in college basketball, in your opinion.

With R. Westbrook's stock surging this year, do you think he will return to UCLA next year, or do you think he will enter the NBA draft (and keep his name in)?

I asked you earlier in the bb season if you thought that RWestrbook had legitimate NBA potential and, at the time you didnt think he was ready. Has your opinion changed?

theilan said:

How exactly do the 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 drills work? Do the players just get together somewhere and toss the ball around, following the plays in the playbook, since coaches can't attend? Do they set this up themselves?

Is it possible/legal for Austin to attend football practice and track practice during the spring?

One of the things we hear whispers about from time to time is the rampant cheating that goes on in college recruiting, yet it seems that hardly any really big recruiting violations come to light (I would classify the Albert Means/Alabama situation as big and the Kelvin Sampson stuff as relatively small). Just in the past few months, people have talked about the suspicious movement of parents of Duke players to Durham, possible payoffs with regards to a former Bruin basketball recruit now headed to the SEC, and the usual bellyaching on the dirtiness of USC. It just boggles the mind that people denounce other schools' recruiting practices as dirty, come up with actual concrete details, yet never try to turn violations in.If so many people know that schools are cheating, why don't they do anything about it?

Thanks for doing this - this is such a great resource for us diehards.

I understand if you're not comfortable answering this, but you've mentioned certain individuals that you've really enjoyed covering to the point that you root for them to succeed. Have there been any specific players who tend to be less forthcoming or whose relationship with the media isn't quite as positive?

How does Kevin Love compare with Lakers' centers Pau Gasol & Andrew Bynum, both in a) current ability and b) potential for improvement and overall upside?

Have you read "The Best American Sports Writing of the Century," by David Halberstam? If so, what are your thoughts on it and can you recommend any other good books about sports writing?

What happen to Boyer the WR from Mater Dei? What school did he choose?

Hey Brian, Between the 3 non-conference football games the bruins have this coming year, which one will be the hardest for UCLA to win? Which ones do you see the team winning? Also, will it help us scheduling three legitimate contenders instead of a scrub game?

Has the coaching staff given any thought to giving Mbah a Moute additional mintues/ rotations at the small forward spot, given that he has played solid defense on guys like Appelby and others during the season?

What exactly is the role of your sports editor? Does he title stories, commission features, help re-write reporter's articles?

uclafan2005 said:

There was a time or two, in the UA game, when Josh Shipp had some open looks but decided to pass to others. Do you think he is gun-shy or hesitant from the outside?

uclafan2005 said:

Is there any chance you would actually get to see a copy of our new playbook, to give readers annectodal tidbits, without revealing substantive or propietary plays/nomenclature?

If UCLA and Stanford finish with identical league records and 1-1 versus each other, who is deemed the Pac 10 Champ (and number one seed in the Pac 10 Tourney)?

Buster Bruin said:

Does the coaching staff expect there will be some commitments during the on campus football recruiting session this weekend?

Eric K said:

what is your take on the Pac-10's "bubble teams"? the consensus seems to be that Arizona State and USC will get a shot in the Big Dance, while Arizona could go either way... do you feel the Pac-10 is a six-bid league?

Jewin said:

I think you had mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the weekday spring football practices would take place in the morning. Have you heard anything more specific about the times, particularly for the weekend practices? Thanks Brian.

Buster Bruin said:

Thus far USC has received 10 football verbal commitments for 2009 while UCLA has garnered only one commitment? Is there good reason to be concerned about the slow pace of recruiting this year? Does the coaching staff appear worried about the slow start?

1) Reportedly, UCLA Football has been on bad terms recruiting Mission Viejo players since a dispute with Coach Bob Johnson, over his son, Brett Johnson's (QB) transfer from UCLA to Michigan State. Are UCLA coaches still persona non-grata or are they welcome on the MV campus now?

2) USC has had a pipeline to Mater Dei and good relations with Coach Rollinson. Can Coach Neuheisel make any inroads in getting Mater Dei kids?

3) Reportedly, Coach Dorrell was the first UCLA Head Coach to ever set foot on the Long Beach Poly campus. Do you think Coach Neuheisel will uphold this tradition and make Poly recruits a priority?

What are your favorite, and least favorite, Pac-10 cities to travel to, and why?

I watched UCLA play Kansas State a few years back in baseball. When talking to some of the parents of the players they where complaining about Jackie Robinson Stadium and how run down it was, for carrying his name. Is there any plans to fix it up or have the already done it?

Tyler Durden said:

What was your reaction when Howland disclosed the details of Wooden's accident? Do you think he made a mistake disclosing those details? Do you think he regrets disclosing the details? How has the family reacted to Howland's disclosure? Did you give any thought to not publishing Howland's comments, given the very public wishes of the family for privacy? What were the reasons you decided to publish Howland's comments? Whom did you consult with before making the decision to publish? Given that some of Howland's comments were inaccurate, do you wish you had consulted with other sources before publishing? What public service do you think you provided by publishing the details Howland disclosed? You've raised many interesting questions about journalistic ethics, which are always good to discuss and analyze, so thanks for the opportunity!

Does UCLA plan on doing any special promotions where the fans all wear white or blue to games??

uclafan2005 said:

How sophisticated would you rate Bruin fans, when it comes to sports knowledge and history, compared to other fan bases across the nation?

uclafan2005 said:

Do you enjoy the Friday Q&A, or do you view it as a penance, chore or necessary evil of work?

uclafan2005 said:

In Coach Wooden's fall, do you think the family erred in being more concerned about publicity than evaluating the fall expeditiously? Why did the ambulance take 45 minutes to arrive once called? Was there an alternate ER to take Coach Wooden without publicity concerns and/or with shorter transport time?

BruinNV said:

I've heard the reasons that Ben doesn't like playing a zone defense but has he ever considered that throwing out a different look on defense could be helpful from time to time to get the opposition a bit off guard? Since we only play man defense can't that make us a bit predictable? Furthermore, is coach Howland adverse to full court pressing?

uclafan2005 said:

Do you know, or can you find out, any details of Russell Westbrook's diet & workout regimens, which allow him to keep his body fat so low and his musculature to be athletic but not bulky?

Spencer said:

Can you compare and contrast James Keefe and Drew Gordon at the same point in their careers. More specifically, what is it about James Keefe that has delayed his ability to impact an early impact. And, do you believe that Drew Gordon has the ability to make an immediate impact next? Why or why not?

uclafan2005 said:

Do you ever find covering both regular-season basketball, and off-season football, at the same time, to be too exhausting? Would you rather cover just one sport, and if so, which one?

Jbruin said:

Do you have any information regarding UCLA's recruitment of Sam DeMartinis, an OL who is now starting his second year at Cal? He was a "highly ranked" OL who was a UCLA legacy and also very interested in UCLA, but for some reason, we did not recruit him. The reason I ask is because the Oline is one of the bigger question marks on our team.

Brian,

Is UCLA still looking at Krys Faber. He has a big body and size to match that is desperately needed for next season? I'm not familiar with the scholarship situation but if they are at the limit, are they doing what they basically did with Russell Westbrook a few years back, recruiting without scholarships to offer? thanks

Sources said:

Brian,

who are the best non-UCLA basketball players you've seen since covering the Bruins? Pac-10 or other.

I'd have to say this season it's been DJ Augustin and all-time for me (last 15 years) would be Jason Kidd.

Brian,
In regards to the renovation of Pauley, will the students remain courtside, or will they move behind the basket like in the Galen Center? Have you heard anything about this?

cbf77 said:

When a new staff takes over usually there are some players that did little under the previous regime, but become key players with the new staff. On defense a couple of years ago Bruce Davis and Christina Taylor became key components after not seeing much time with Kerr as DC. On offense for next year whom would you expect to breakout with the new staff? My guess will be Christian Rodriguez, the talent is there and coupling that with the injuries at the position he should be the man in the spring and if he carries momentum into the fall he could make a claim to the starting RB job. So I guess a second question would be do see this scenario as plausible?

On LOI day (Wed Feb 7th) UCLA held a private Donor event, with Coach Neuheisel, to introduce the recruiting class. What level of Donors were invited to this private affair, and who determined which Donors could attend?

uclafan2005 said:

Is Ken Norris stil UCLA's film coordinator? How exactly will he work with Coaches for game preparation (cut-ups etc)?

uclafan2005 said:

Whenever I've heard them interviewed, Coach Neuheisel has been upbeat, funny and enthusiastic. Coach Howland, on the other hand, has been subdued, reserved, and at times, almost mumbled his comments. Is this attributable to their differing personalities, or because the basketball season is so exhausting for Coach Howland?

Buster Bruin said:

Do you think UCLA will get the number one seed in the west if they beat Stanford tonight and Cal on Saturday?

Buster Bruin said:

Lately Dragovic has played a few minutes in some games while Stanback has remained on the bench. What seems to be the problem with Stanback? Is it defensive lapses, inconsistent shooting, too many turnovers, or some other reason? How has his morale been going from the star player in high school to a benchwarmer as a college freshman?

Buster Bruin said:

USC recruit Maurice Simmons was arrested for armed robbery yet there has been virtually no mention of the matter in the press except for a small blurb in Wolfie's blog. Why is it that the press provides major news coverage on any rare occasion when a UCLA player gets in trouble but ignores major transgressions by USC players and recruits? Is it because USC owns the press? Or is it because improper behavior by USC players occurs so often that it is not newsworty? Or am I just being paranoid?

What is your opinion on the call at the end of regulation play in the Stanford game? What did you think of the whole game? Any thoughts on UCLA's NCAA tournament chances now that the regular season is almost to an end?

How many more games do you think UCLA needs to win in order to ensure the #1 seed in the west?
