PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Today's Wooden update

UCLA just sent this release on John Wooden:

John Wooden, UCLA's legendary former basketball coach, is improving daily during his stay in a local hospital. The name of the hospital is being withheld at the request of the family.

“Dad was doing much better today,” said Nan Muehlhausen, Coach Wooden’s daughter. “His rapid heart rate is under control and we think he should be leaving the hospital in the next couple of days.

“(Hall of Fame basketball player) Bill Russell and his wife visited Dad earlier today. Andy Hill, one of Dad’s former players, also visited.” Several of Coach’s former players have visited him in the last few days, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Warren.

Muehlhausen also said that Coach Wooden watched Thursday night’s game versus Stanford with his son Jim.

Coach Wooden, 97, was hospitalized on Friday with a hairline fracture of his left wrist and a fractured left collarbone he sustained in a fall in his condo on Thursday night. His wrist is in a cast and his arm will have to be in a sling when he leaves the hospital.
