PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Wooden still hospitalized

Here is the update from UCLA:

John Wooden, UCLA's legendary former basketball coach, continues to improve during his stay in a local hospital. The name of the hospital is being withheld at the request of the family.
Coach Wooden, 97, was hospitalized on Friday with a hairline fracture of his left wrist and a fractured left collarbone he sustained in a fall in his condo on Thursday night. His wrist is in a cast and his arm will have to be in a sling when he leaves the hospital.
Nan Muehlhausen, Coach Wooden’s daughter, said her father continues to be in good spirits and was doing well on Wednesday afternoon.
“Dad looks better today than he did yesterday and he isn’t as drowsy from his pain medication,” said Muehlhausen. “His appetite is better today and he was up and around for about an hour and a half.”
She added that Coach Wooden had some irregularity of his heart rate but that his medication was being changed to alleviate that issue. She also said it has not yet been decided when Coach Wooden will leave the hospital.
The Wooden family has requested that people not attempt to call or visit the hospital so that Coach Wooden can rest. They have also requested that people not mail items for autographs.
“The family appreciates everyone’s kind thoughts but we are requesting that people not send flowers or other items at this time, there just isn’t anywhere to put them,” Muehlhausen said.

Normally one would not think this could be life threatening, but for a 97 year old the trauma can be over-whelming, and the jury is still out.

Except that this is one tough old guy.
