Chow's assessment of the QBs

I got a chance to ask OC Norm Chow about his initial assessments of UCLA's quarterbacks after practice today:

``Obviously Ben (Olson) and Pat (Cowan) have been around. It's just seems they understand what's going on. They're more mature physically, have stronger arms.

``I think Kevin (Craft) is a tremendous athlete, but this is all new to him, He's been in the (shot) gun. We'll be in the gun, but we haven't done it yet. He has a nice strong arm, but he's a little bit overwhelmed. I think Osaar (Rasshan) and Chris (Forcier) are a little young. Osaar, this is his fourth year, but playing-wise he's still a little younger. They're both talented guys who'll probably have to wait their turn.''

Later, I asked specifically about Kevin Craft, who had a couple of plays where he looked lost on Tuesday, but then seemed to bounce back quickly to make good plays. Craft is a little behind some of the other players since he wasn't able to attend football meetings until just a few weeks ago.

``That's the problem. They have all these crazy rules so you can barely get together,'' Chow joked.

As for the differences specifically between Cowan and Olson, Chow had this to say:

``Theyre actually very similar. They're both bright, have been through the school of hard knocks, both had injuries, both very competitive. Pat may have a little bit stronger arm, but they're both very talented athletes.''

It's been a bit hard to really get a read on the five QBs in such a short time, but Chow said he's been through this before.

``I remember back there, across town, there was (Matt) Leinart and (Matt) Cassel and (Brandon) Hance and all those kids. It's normal. They have to understand, there's one ball and only one guy gets to play.''

That's very interesting that Coach Chow said Pat may have a little bit stronger arm. All this time we were all thinking Ben had the canon for the arm.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
