Olson, Cowan story

Here is the story I wrote for online. Quarterback Patrick Cowan's 2008 season is in jeopardy.

By Brian Dohn
UCLA quarterback Patrick Cowan’s season is in jeopardy after an MRI today revealed damage to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Surgery is a possibility, but he will be re-examined when the swelling decreases.
If surgery is needed to repair the ACL, Cowan would miss the 2008 season.
Meanwhile x-rays showed, Cowan’s backup, Ben Olson, fractured the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot and will be out six to eight weeks. Whether surgery is needed to place in a screw in Olson’s foot will be determined later on.
Both quarterbacks are red-shirt seniors, and were injured during non-contact drills in Thursday’s practice. Neither will play in Saturday’s spring game at the Rose Bowl.
Cowan had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in February, and sat out Tuesday’s practice because of soreness in his knee. The team was off Wednesday, and Cowan aggravated the injury during Thursday’s practice.
Olson, who has been ravaged by injuries the last two seasons, broke the bone in his foot when he planted to throw a pass in Thursday’s practice.

Since Cowan and Olson seem to be made of eggshells, perhaps it's time for Coach Neuheisel to cut his losses with these 2 and put some serious work into readying Craft and Forcier for the upcoming season.

How do you break a bone in your foot while planting to make a pass? I'm seriously asking since I cannot even begin to comprehend this. Are these guys wearing shoes with some sort of support? Are they actual football shoes? Are they beach flip-flops? Seriously, this is insane and I'm gonna start believing the curse, hex, thing too pretty soon.

Did someone check to see if there's a USC football jersey buried under Spaulding field?

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
