One-and-done take
I received some emails about my thoughts on an ESPN.com piece that focused on the student aspect of UCLA's Kevin Love and Memphis' Derrick Rose, and was askd what I thought.
To me, I have no problem with the classes Love is taking. I thought the story was more of a rip on the NCAA than Love. If the NBA is not going to allow guys to go from high school to the NBA, than they should be able to take whatever classes they want. The idea is the college experience, and not only what classes are taken.
One thing about Love, though, is he could not afford to bag classes after the fall quarter. Since UCLA is on the quarter system, he had to complete the academic requirements for the winter quarter or he would not be eligible for the Final Four.
Any thoughts on this story?

Brian,
Good catch. My advise to ESPN would be to report ALL the classes KLove and DRose have taken. Having one slacker class doesn't mean much. I know Kevin is taking at least three classes a quarter, so has taken 6 classes at UCLA and is enrolled for 3 more. So, out of 9 classes, picking out one isn't very useful to determine an athletes academic commitment.
Brian,
One more thing, can you find out the classes KLove has taken and is enrolled for in the current quarter? I think that would be good to get a balanced perspective rather than focusing on one class. Thanks.
The only problem I have with the class is that it doesnt seem to be an actual class. There were conflicting reports from the SID on whether it is actually a class. I dont blame him for taking slacker classes, everyone takes them. I want to know what other classes he is taking and if Sports and Masculinity is a real class available to students.
I think it's against their privacy to reveal all the classes they're taking.
