About Inside UCLA
This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.About this Entry

Well, I think it's ok, but a decision made too early. Given the history of Ben and Pat, it might not matter because of injuries. I hope Craft and Forcier get enough practice, because they might be called on by mid season.
I have great faith in Norm Chow, so I'll hold out hope and support this team. Perhaps the slow development of the O line led to this - Pat's much more mobile.
I personally like the move...he made all the guys on offense play harder, they had fun with him out there. Not to mention maybe this makes Ben work harder to take the starting job back. It's a good move, Ben has the potential, but so far it's only been that potential.
I have to agree with both Ri-L and alxandr. I think it was a bit early to make a decision, but if one is to be made, I'm glad that it was Pat who got the nod. He seems to play with passion, something that might be more important than his mobility.
With a questionable (read: BAD) o-line, we're going to need a mobile quarterback. When you add in his heart, he seems to be the sensible choice over Ben, who has never really shown a lot of fire. Further factor in the fact that Ben is a pocket passer that can't (and won't) take a hit, and I'd start with Pat, too.
I didn't vote because none of the choices matches my thinking. I think that the competition is not yet over. I have no idea who will eventually win, but I do not think the quarterback derby has ended.
Brian,
In your article published Sunday you mentioned, "during the scrimmage sources said junior college transfer Kevin Craft is being lined up to beat out Olson for the backup job". Can you explain what that means in more detail? It sounds like the coaching staff is trying to drive Olson out of the team.
If I were to pick I'm going with Pat but with that said the kid that had the arm and had mobility wasn't even invited back this year and that was the walk-on Crook. If you had attended any of the practices last year you'd know who he is. With Pat, Olsen and Crook we would have had a good nucleus of QB's. But now we have the new kids and this Craft who obviously was an after thought. (refer to the new recruit luncheon video where Rick forgets all about the kid if he is so great how do you forget all about him?) to put it bluntly I think Craft was brought in to cover their asses if Pat decided to leave. Chris Forcier you never hear about, Osaar I bet will leave because he's not a Quarterback at this level and he proved last year he just doesn't have a strong arm with some of those ducks he was throwing. I hope I'm wrong but so far and from what I have seen I'm sticking to my observations so far. And so far I think we have dropped the ball.Chow knows of Crook he has too, he was in the same recruiting class as SC's Mark Sanchez. I wonder if Norm ever knew he was on the scout team last year and have we squandered an opportunity with that walk on who could probably help out in some capacity if someone goes down. After all wasn't Rick a walk-on.
