Cowan's role

| | Comments (1) |

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel said injured quarterback Patrick Cowan will wait until August to have the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee repaired, but Neuheisel added he hoped Cowan would still want to be around the program in the fall despite being out for the season.
"I'm hopeful that he'll come back and be hungry enough to be a student assistant for us,'' Neuheisel said. "That's one of those things where you're not sure how a student is going to handle (not being able) to play and still be around it. We'll have to wait and see."
Cowan was UCLA's starter until late in spring practice, when he injured his knee during a non-contact drill in the next to last practice.

I hope Pat takes the student assistant position. He is a leader and even if he can't play, he brings a certain level of energy that the team responds to. Even from our seats in the nosebleed section, when Pat is on the field, the players are more excited and he brings that x factor to the team.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
