Diamond Note

Thought I'd share a story I wrote for today's paper on UCLA softball player Ashley Herrera. She's something of a medical miracle, having bounced back from a torn ACL in just over four months, then a dislocated ankle in just 10 weeks. What's more, she's a walk-on who earned her way into the starting lineup for the No. 4 ranked women's softball team, which takes on No. 1 Arizona State today at 3 and tommorrow at 1.

RS, shouldn't it read: "the No. 4 ranked softball team" since there is no men's team?

can she give some of her healing ability to Patrick Cowan?

Actually Andrew,

Ashley told me she and Patrick Cowan have gotten to be pretty good friends from all the time they've spent together in the training room.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
