The NCAA West Regional Championships are at Cal State Northridge Friday and Saturday, and UCLA has a bundle of athletes competing. Yes, this is where you qualify for the nationals.
Here is something put together by UCLA's Stephanie Sampson about the school's participants:
The UCLA men, ranked No. 3 in the U.S., have the most regional qualifiers (31)
of any school in the country. They also have the most single event qualifiers of any team in the country (six steeplechase/six pole vaulters).
Darius Savage, who set a personal record by two feet at the Pac-10 meet in the shot put, will throw the shot today and discus Saturday. He ranks 15th in the shot put and 19th in the discus nationally.
Westlake High graduate Cory Primm, a freshman, ranks sixth in school history after his third-place lifetime-best run in the 800 meters at the Pac-10 championships two weeks ago (1:47.75). That mark ranks sixth in the nation this season and is No. 3 in the West Region.
The women are ranked eighth nationally. Junior NCAA champion Nicole Leach has one the past two 400m hurdle crowns, and holds the West Region record in the event.
Rhonda Watkins has one the past two long jump crowns and also holds the West Region record in the event.
Freshman All-American pole vaulter Tori Anthony is competing at the West Region meet after having had to sit out of the Pac-10 championships with mononucleosis. She will head into the meet w/ basically no practice under her belt for the past 3 weeks. She
ranks seventh in the nation right now
