Night Owl bonus (again)

| | Comments (6) |

I wrote this for Saturday's paper, but here's a sneak peek of a few lines.

Kevin Love said he will soon sign with Los Angeles-based agent Jeff Schwartz, ending any microscopic chance of returning for a second season.
Love, an all-American and the Pacific-10 player of the year, added he is no longer attending classes.
"I have to actually sign the papers to get out of school because I have a few (endorsements) on the table where I can actually start making money,'' Love said. "When am I signing with an agent? As early as Tuesday. It's just getting all the paperwork together. I'm going with Jeff Schwartz.''

(By the way, this is night owl time for those of us with toddler who believe it is their job to wake up the roosters in time to crow for the rising sun.)

Microscopic hope it was, but it was still there I guess. I am really happy for him but the selfish side of me hoped some way some how he would come back. Actually, that was just a dream! We all knew he was gone. Good Luck Kevin! UCLA fans appreciated every minute of your college career.

Thanks for the night owl report - us late night people appreciate it!

Is UCLA going to be negatively impacted by Love 'no longer attending classes'?

I was going to ask the same question. USC lost two scholarships because Nick Young, Gabe Pruit, and Lod Stewart dropped out after their last season. How do you make a kid finish classes (and pass) when they're concerned about preparing for the NBA? The kid has to do what's best for him but it's not fair that the school gets penalized.

Now that Morgan has pretty much decided on UCLA (official once he starts class), I'm curious about Stepheson's status. If he were to pick UCLA and could play immediately due to the circumstances of his transfer (his father's illness), would UCLA have a scholarship available or would that be contingent on Aboya leaving?

Schools are allowed 13 scholarships. We had 11 students on scholarships. LRM graduated. Love and RW are most likely draft bound. Stanback transfers. Thats seven left. Then you add the fab five and maybe stephenson would be the 13th player. If Aboya leaves, that means we have another spot available.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
